Keheliya Rambukwella, the current Minister of Environment (Cabinet) and former Minister of Health in Sri Lanka, was arrested and remanded. According to PC Nalinda Indrathissa, this marks the first time in Sri Lankan history that a minister has been charged with a criminal allegation while still holding a ministerial portfolio.
⭕️Main allegation: Using the economic crisis in the country as a cover, Rambukwella allegedly introduced a cabinet paper to initiate the emergency medical supply of 182 types of medicine, many of which were not in short supply, including human immunoglobulin. This bypassed the regular tender process and removed old suppliers, allegedly creating an opportunity for a particular supplier to provide fake immunoglobulin.
⭕️ Cause for concern: The government could have charged Rambukwella with various offenses but chose to charge him under the Government Public Property Act. This same legislation was used by the Financial Crimes Investigation Division (FCID) during the "Good Governance" regime to arrest former ministers & MPs for short periods (ranging from two weeks to a few months) keep them in remand custody and deny bail. However, none of the charges against these ministers ultimately stuck.
❗SCAM ALERT ❗
This is something that happened today.
I booked a @PickMeLK and the distance of the journey was 6 km.
While going on the pick me I noticed that the driver was running a separate app called 'Mock'.
