@ECP_Entsoc@EntsocAmerica@MUVE_ESA@SysEB_Entsoc@PIE_Entsoc@EsaPbt I'm an #Extension hort specialist & urban entomologist. Mostly, I make research accessible to the public.
I'll be talking in @morrisonlabUSDA & @Phytoseiid's writing symp on Wed, Nov 20. My talks: "Extension End Game: Impact" & mini-wkshp based on my mag column "Kids ask Dr. Bug"
Tens of billions of noisy cicadas are set to emerge from the ground in the coming weeks in a rare synchronized event that last took place 221 years ago.

@JodyBugsMeUNL@BugQuestions @Bertonemyia @EntoLudwick @BYFUNL That does look a lot like this beetle! I'll look into it some more...and check out the show, too! Thanks!
@jessa_thurman The quiz is a fun way to break the ice on the topic, too. I'm not particular if my public audiences use "bug" for every creepy crawly after that, or not. I just want to make sure we're on the same page.
@jessa_thurman I often start presentations out with a pop quiz with a screen full of "bug" images. I ask them to choose the one true bug. That gets them involved, lets me know more about my audience, and gives me a chance to explain what a true bug is and how I will be using the term.
@JodyBugsMeUNL @EntoLudwick @BugQuestions @Bertonemyia So, this picture was taken in SW Missouri recently. These are on the foundation of the person's house.
@CarolineSChaboo@JodyBugsMeUNL This is peach leaf curl, caused by the fungus Taphrina deformans. It's too late to treat this spring, but there are things you can do for the future. Check out the IPM strategies on this page: https://t.co/Xz9POsq5OB
@CarolineSChaboo@JodyBugsMeUNL Some of my favorite herbs in a garden are basil, lemon thyme, chives, and lavender. These are pollinator-friendly, low maintenance, have few pest problems, and grow well in my midwestern garden.
@CarolineSChaboo If you're trying to reduce mosquitoes, eliminating standing water is your best bet. Look for containers, such as tire swings, gutters, poorly drained soil, *stuff*, etc. Re: plants and mosquitoes, check out this article: https://t.co/iL6Btp1JR3
@CarolineSChaboo some of which will be predators and will help control the pests. Unfortunately, there is no way to eliminate just the pests while keeping the beneficials.
