@profmarkcollard@naomicfisher Anyway I think we should leave this here, I really hope you're not looking after a non verbal autistic person, as by adhering to Frith's expertise you'll be missing out on life changing, helpful understanding - and causing them damage. That's why people are so upset.
@profmarkcollard@naomicfisher Her assumptions about autistic people are based on their deficiencies and their awe inspiring abilities. When you incorporate lived experience into a concept of autism everything changes and becomes much more coherent useful and rehumanising. She fails to see this.
@profmarkcollard@naomicfisher If you cannot challenge her opinions that's not science either. Perhaps you mean only scientists can be scientific therefore you're commiting an
argumentum ad verecundiam
An appeal to authority fallacy, a move that contradicts the core principles of the scientific method.
@Dmdav1@FunFactsLulu Exactly. The experiences communicated by autistic people significantly advanced autism understanding. Those who were disproved are still smarting and trying to hang on to their authority status.
@profmarkcollard@naomicfisher Autism research from Ute Frith's heyday was observational. I think anthropology went through a similar period of projecting onto others without much feedback from the subjects. Science adjusts to new evidence. Experiential data challenged a lot of previous autism research.
@profmarkcollard@naomicfisher How so? If the people 'piling on' are the subjects of the research, it suggests that the expert's evidence and conclusion are suspect.
@KatyElphinstone@naomicfisher@FrithUta Thanks, I'm not going to listen. Take care of yourself, I think there is cumulative damage done every time we come up against authority figures whose attitude leaves you with that
'tightness' She's wrong.
@KatyElphinstone@naomicfisher@FrithUta Yeah I really rate Naomi too - I'm just wondering if I should listen to this interview to resolve my confusion on this (or probably get cross) or just enjoy an otherwise peaceful Saturday!
