I’ve just done same exercise as Craig: under @top_nz communist land tax Mrs H and I would be paying $774 a WEEK to government in land tax. $40,250 per annum.

The disaster of this is unimaginable. We already know the elderly are economically euthanised under LVT. They’re out of their homes. Worse, elderly care homes are already exorbitant, add LVT cost to be paid by elderly and their families. More generally the rental market blows up. Commercial buildings pay same rate: that sector has been in trouble since Covid, we’re stuck in Oyster Direct Property which had to stop redemptions, they have too much debt, the LVT would be the end of that fund, that cost, and all business owning land takes a massive hit to profitability. Farm land has a lower LVT rate but the tax will still be crippling.

LVT hits every part of our lives, every part of business: it’s economic nuclear winter.

TOP would nuke New Zealand’s economy. Wealth will be destroyed and the even more evil consequence: absolute power will go to government with your land value taxes, as in all communist countries where the citizens are made serfs. Everyone with the wherewithal will leave because we will have no choice.

And note, they will put the LVT on but you will never get a UBI, and no other taxes will be lessened. We all know that.
