📌Nigeria's Civil Registration Goes Fully Digital

Since 1 July 2026, the National Population Commission (NPC) has rolled out VitalReg as Nigeria's sole digital platform for Civil Registration and Vital Statistics (CRVS), replacing the old paper-heavy process.

What this means for Nigerians:
✅ Faster birth and death registration.
✅ Apply online anytime, reducing long queues and unnecessary travel.
✅ Secure digital certificates with easier verification and reprints.
✅ Faster correction of errors on certificates.
✅ Better integration with other government services in the future.

Services now available include:

- Birth registration (0–17 years)
- Birth attestation (18+ without a birth certificate)
- Foreign birth notification
- Death registration
- Certificate correction, reprint and reissuance

- Health facility onboarding

Why it matters

Over 5 million children are born in Nigeria every year, yet only about 57% are registered. Death registration is below 20%. Without these records, many Nigerians face challenges accessing education, healthcare, passports, inheritance claims and other government services.

The new digital system is designed to make registration easier, improve data accuracy, reduce paperwork and lay the foundation for more efficient public service delivery.

Adeleke @AAdeleke_01 Set to Appoint Murder Suspect, Emir Ajagungbade, as Chairman of Osun Park Management

Barring any unforeseen circumstances, the Osun State Government is set to appoint Olalekan Oyeyemi, popularly known as Emir Ajagungbade, as Chairman of the Osun Park Management System (OPMS) on Wednesday, replacing Nurudeen Wakeel, also known as Nurudeen Alowonle.

On Monday, the APC-led Association of Local Governments of Nigeria (ALGON) suspended union activities at motor parks and garages across the state until further notice to prevent a further breakdown of law and order after a faction of the NURTW staged street protests over allegations that its members were being denied access to parks and garages for their business activities.

ALGON based its decision on Paragraph 1(e) of the Fourth Schedule to the 1999 Constitution, which vests the regulation of motor parks in local government councils.

The planned appointment of Emir Ajagungbade is therefore expected to run contrary to this constitutional provision and could further escalate tensions within the state's motor parks and garages.

Both Emir Ajagungbade and Nurudeen Alowonle have reportedly been declared wanted by law enforcement agencies in connection with alleged murder cases and other criminal offences.

Several unresolved killings in Osun State since 2022 have been linked to both men in media reports and public allegations.

In 2022, Tajudeen Rabiu, an APC chieftain and NURTW leader in Osogbo, was killed. In the same year, one Waheed was also murdered. According to reports, one of his legs was tied with a rope and cut before he was killed, after which his body was taken away by the assailants. The killing has been linked to Emir Ajagungbade.

Also in November 2022, an APC member, Muraina Olayiwola, was reportedly murdered. Reports alleged that Nurudeen Alowonle, in collaboration with Emir Ajagungbade and their associates, was responsible for the killing.

Another APC member, Olalekan Ososondi, was also reportedly killed. According to reports, his head was smashed with heavy stones, and the killing has been linked to Emir Ajagungbade.

In 2023, another APC member, Ismail Dudu, was killed in Ota Efun. Reports alleged that his throat was slit before he died. Emir Ajagungbade and Nurudeen Alowonle have both been accused in connection with the killing

The federal government says it has paid N333 billion to eight participating electricity generation companies (GenCos), covering 17 power plants, under the first phase of the power sector debt settlement programme.

Olu Verheijen, special adviser to the president on energy, spoke on Tuesday during the investor forum for the N729 billion series II bond issuance of the presidential power sector financial reforms programme (PPSFRP).

“Series I delivered on its promise. In February 2026, the Federal Government deployed approximately ₦501 billion, N300 billion in cash and roughly ₦201 billion through non-cash bond instruments, addressing approximately 22 percent of the settlement obligations under executed Settlement Agreements, with the balance to be covered through Series II and subsequent issuances,” she said.

PRESIDENT TINUBU SIGNS EXECUTIVE ORDER ON VIRTUAL ASSETS, ESTABLISHES COUNCIL TO HARMONISE REGULATION OF DIGITAL ECONOMY

President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, GCFR, has signed the Presidential Executive Order on Virtual Assets Coordination, 2026, to harmonise the regulation of virtual assets, strengthen cooperation among the nation's financial, revenue and capital markets agencies, protect citizens from fraud, and safeguard the integrity of the financial system while enabling responsible innovation.

The President signed the Order pursuant to Section 5 of the Constitution of the Federal Republic of Nigeria, 1999 (as altered). The Executive Order takes effect immediately.

It responds to a regulatory environment that has become fragmented as virtual assets increasingly blur the traditional boundaries between currencies, money, commodities and securities.

With relevant agencies operating in silos, overlapping in some areas and leaving gaps in others, the country has been exposed to risks, including money laundering, terrorism financing, cybersecurity and data privacy threats, fraud, and revenue losses. Too often, unregistered and fraudulent operators have exploited these gaps to prey on unsuspecting Nigerians, costing families their savings.

The Order is designed to close these gaps through supervisory coordination, without introducing new layers of regulation or displacing the mandates of existing agencies.

To achieve this, the Order establishes a Virtual Asset Council, chaired by the Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN), with the Nigeria Revenue Service (NRS) and the Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC) as vice-chairs, and comprising the Nigerian Financial Intelligence Unit (NFIU) and the Office of the National Security Adviser (ONSA).

The Council will provide policy direction, promote synergy among the participating agencies, and work with the Attorney-General of the Federation to develop a harmonised legal and institutional framework that aligns the sector with Nigeria's national security, economic and social objectives.

The Order also establishes a Virtual Asset Office, the Council's operational body, with its secretariat domiciled at the CBN. The Office will be responsible for the day-to-day coordination of information sharing, applications, and reporting among the agencies, supported by an integrated supervisory technology platform that provides shared visibility while preserving each agency's ownership and control of its data.

Significantly, the Order does not create a new regulator or transfer powers between agencies. Each institution retains its full statutory mandate and independence, and the framework coordinates their work rather than replacing it. To provide certainty for operators and protection for the public, registration will follow the nature of the activity and the asset involved: activities like securities will be registered by the SEC, while payment, settlement, custody and related services involving non-security virtual assets will be registered by the CBN, with the Council resolving any case in which responsibility cannot be readily determined.

This closes the gaps through which unregistered operators have previously escaped oversight.

As part of the coordinated approach, the Central Bank of Nigeria is proceeding with a regulatory sandbox for virtual assets. The sandbox will provide a controlled environment in which eligible operators can test and operate virtual asset products, services, and blockchain-based solutions under close supervision, enabling the participating agencies to assess the implications for monetary sovereignty, financial stability, market integrity, consumer protection, financial inclusion, and revenue administration before products reach the wider market. It will help ensure that innovations that reach Nigerians have been properly examined and supervised.

The CBN will announce further details of the sandbox.

In the same spirit, the Nigerian Revenue Service will release a tax policy for the virtual assets sector.

The policy operationalises Nigeria's tax laws as they apply to virtual assets, providing greater certainty for taxpayers and service providers, strengthening voluntary compliance, and ensuring that the sector contributes fairly to national revenue as it grows. It complements the coordination framework by aligning revenue administration with the work of the other participating authorities. The NRS will provide further details.

The Federal Government is also finalising a comprehensive Virtual Assets White Paper, which will set out the country's longer-term policy direction and implementation priorities and serve as a roadmap for stakeholders across the sector.

The Council has been directed to develop a Harmonised Implementation Framework within 30 days to guide the participating agencies in giving effect to the Order and to ensure its expedited implementation.

Chief Oyedokun's life has remained a shining example of principled leadership, bridge-building, and an unwavering commitment to peace. Through decades of public service and political engagement, he has consistently demonstrated that dialogue, mutual respect, and reconciliation remain the strongest foundations for sustainable nation-building.

The launch of this memoir, coinciding with the celebration of his 91st birthday, is a fitting tribute to a life dedicated to service, wisdom, and national unity. It offers invaluable lessons for leaders, policymakers, and the younger generation on the enduring values of diplomacy, conflict resolution, and selfless leadership.

After the funeral prayer, we visited Dr. Basiru and his family at their residence to personally convey our heartfelt condolences and pray that Almighty Allah grants them the strength and fortitude to bear this irreplaceable loss.

The passing of a mother is a profound loss that leaves an irreplaceable void. We, however, take solace in the certainty that every soul shall return to its Creator.

I pray that Almighty Allah (SWT) forgives all the shortcomings of our dearly departed mother, Alhaja Sidikat Abeke Basiru, enlarges and illuminates her grave, admits her into Al-Jannatul Firdaus, and grants her eternal rest. May He also continue to comfort and uphold the entire Basiru family during this difficult time.
