KASU-ASUU: Kaduna govt approves N300m earned allowance, sets up committee
Kaduna State Government has constituted a nine-member Negotiation Committee to comprehensively engage and review the demands of the Kaduna State University, KASU, chapter of the Academic Staff Union of Universities, ASUU, and other staff unions.
A statement issued by the Secretary to the State Government, Dr AbdulKadir Mu’azu Meyere, also disclosed that Governor Uba Sani has approved a one-off ₦300 million payment of Earned Academic Allowance, EAA.
Mr Meyere, pointed out that ‘’the intervention demonstrates the administration’s commitment to staff welfare, industrial harmony and the stability of the University through constructive dialogue and sustainable solutions.’’
According to him, ‘’the ₦300 million Earned Academic Allowance (EAA) intervention builds on sustained efforts by the Uba Sani administration to address a backlog of over ₦800 million in accumulated entitlements and allowances dating back to 2016.’’
The statement listed other interventions that the Governor Uba Sani administration made in the last three and half years, to include the settlement of outstanding withheld salaries.
Besides that, the present administration has paid ‘’ over ₦300 million for the accreditation of academic programmes and resource-verification exercises for postgraduate programmes,’’ Dr Meyere added.
The Secretary to the State Government also listed the release of funds to clear outstanding SIWES supervision allowances; and the establishment of a ₦50 million monthly standing order dedicated to the systematic settlement of outstanding arrears.’’
The statement disclosed that Negotiation Committee will be chaired by the Commissioner of Education, Professor Abubakar Sani Sambo, adding that the Commissioner of Business, Innovation and Technology, Mrs. Patience Fakai; and Commissioner of Youth, Mrs. Gloria Ibrahim are members.
Other members of the committee include the Chairman, Local Government Service Board, Professor Ladan Sharehu; Director-General, Kaduna State Schools Quality Assurance Authority, Professor Usman Abubakar Zaria; Vice-Chancellor of KASU, Professor Abdullahi Ibrahim Musa; and Pro-Chancellor, Dr. Ibrahim Umar.
The Permanent Secretary, General Services, Office of the Secretary to the State Government, is also a member, while the Permanent Secretary, Establishments Services and Training, will serve as Secretary of the committee.
The committee which has four weeks to conclude its assignment and submit recommendations to the Government, is mandated to review the demands of ASUU, SSANU, NASU and NAAT.
The statement further said that the committee will examine the Consolidated Academic Tools Allowance, CATA; compare KASU’s situation with prevailing practices in other state universities; and determine the financial implications of implementing demands arising from the 2025 ASUU–Federal Government agreement.
The Secretary to the Government noted that the committee is expected to recommend practical, equitable and financially sustainable options for resolving the outstanding issues.
He urged all the unions to embrace dialogue, negotiation and collective bargaining rather than industrial action that could disrupt the academic calendar and adversely affect students and their families.
The statement reiterated that government’s ‘’ channels of engagement remain open and assured the university community of its commitment to strengthening KASU, improving staff welfare and safeguarding uninterrupted academic activities.’’
The Speaker of the Kaduna State House of Assembly, Rt. Hon. Yusuf Liman, inspected the newly completed Makera Road and the LEA Babban Dodo Primary School Project, both delivered by the administration of His Excellency, Senator Uba Sani.
The projects are significant interventions that demonstrate Gov Uba Sani administration’s commitment to improving infrastructure, education and the overall well-being of the good People of Kaduna State.
NBA commends Uba Sani for renovating courts, providing ‘40 vehicles’ for judges
The Nigerian Bar Association (NBA), Kaduna branch, has commended Uba Sani, the state governor, for strengthening the judiciary and improving the administration of justice.
In a statement issued by Baba Lawal Aliyu, chairman of the NBA Kaduna branch, the association appreciated the “massive renovation and rehabilitation” of the high court complex.
Lawal Aliyu praised the governor for “providing 40 official vehicles to judges” of the high court, Shari’ah court of appeal and customary court of appeal.
“These interventions will undoubtedly enhance the working environment, mobility and overall performance of judicial officers,” the statement reads.
“The branch also welcomes the restoration of the payment of robe allowance to Magistrates, including the payment in 2025 of the outstanding 2024 robe allowance.
“These initiatives demonstrate the government’s appreciation of the judiciary as a critical institution for the sustenance of the rule of law and effective justice delivery.”
The NBA, however, appealed to Sani to extend the provision of official vehicles to lower courts and improve their facilities and working conditions.
“Magistrates and other judicial officers at the lower courts are at the frontline of justice delivery and require adequate logistical and infrastructural support to perform their duties effectively,” the association said.
The NBA said continued investment across all levels of the judiciary would improve access to justice, reduce delays and strengthen public confidence in the justice system.

ASUU Commends Kaduna Govt Over KASU Funding
The Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU), Kaduna State University (KASU) chapter, has commended the Kaduna State Government for addressing some of the longstanding challenges confronting the institution.
The chairman of ASUU-KASU, Dr Abubakar Abdullahi, made the remarks at a press briefing in Kaduna on the union’s ultimatum to the state government over what it described as poor working conditions and other challenges affecting the university.
Abdullahi said the union’s position was not intended to castigate the government, but to draw its attention to areas requiring further intervention to strengthen the university.
He acknowledged some steps already taken by the present administration, saying the union would continue to commend the government whenever it addressed issues affecting the institution.
“Where you have done something, we commend you, and where there is an issue, we bring it to your attention to address,” he said.
The chairman recalled that the government had addressed some of the issues contained in previous agreements with the union, including matters relating to salaries and allowances.
According to him, out of about 10 issues previously presented by the union, three had been addressed, while seven remained outstanding.
He said the union was particularly encouraged by the government’s review of a previous decision on school fees, recalling that ASUU had opposed the increase because of its potential impact on students.
“When the current government came about, they reviewed the decision and we commend them for that,” he said.
Abdullahi stressed that ASUU’s interventions were not limited to the welfare of its members, but were aimed at protecting the university system and ensuring that tertiary education in Kaduna State remained competitive.
He said the union considered its responsibilities to include teaching, research and community service.
The chairman also praised KASU’s achievements, saying the institution had performed creditably compared with other universities despite the challenges confronting it.
He described KASU as an institution that could serve Kaduna State for generations if properly supported.
“Roads would come and go. Physical infrastructure would not live more than 30 to 50 years. But KASU is an institution we hope and pray will still be here for the next 100 or 200 years,” he said.
He added that the university had started on “the very right footing” and had recorded achievements that compared favourably with established universities.
“I am not even talking about state universities. Federally established universities, first-generation universities, we go to places and we beat them, hands down,” Abdullahi said.
He therefore called for sustained government support, improved staff welfare and proper funding to enable the institution to retain its academic workforce and maintain its standards.
On the two-week ultimatum, Abdullahi clarified that the union was not eager to embark on industrial action, stressing that dialogue remained its preferred option.
“Usually, people have this wrong notion that ASUU always wants to embark on strike. That is not our desire or passion,” he said.
According to him, the purpose of the briefing was to bring the challenges to the attention of the government and the public in the hope that they would be resolved before the ultimatum expired.
He said ASUU remained ready for dialogue with the government at any time, stressing that peace and stability in the university were in the interest of all stakeholders.
“Even if the government calls us now, we are ready to move. Anything that will bring peace to the system, stability, that is what we want,” he said.
Abdullahi also urged the government to implement the new Federal Government-ASUU agreement, saying its provisions could benefit both university staff and the administration through improved funding and management.
Ashiru needs lesson in education funding – Commissioner
Kaduna State Government has faulted the African Democratic Congress (ADC) governorship candidate, Alhaji Isa Mohammed Ashiru, over his criticism of Governor Uba Sani’s commitment to education, saying the state has consistently exceeded global funding benchmarks.
The Commissioner for Information and Culture, Malam Ahmed Maiyaki, in a statement on Wednesday, said Ashiru is entitled to criticise the government but should base his arguments on verifiable facts.
“Mr. Ashiru is entitled to criticise the government. But when an aspirant to the highest office in the state gets basic facts about education funding wrong, a little lesson becomes necessary,” he said.
Maiyaki faulted Ashiru’s claim that UNESCO recommends that governments should allocate 15 to 20 per cent of their budgets to education.
He pointed out that the Education 2030 Framework for Action recommends at least four to six per cent of Gross Domestic Product or 25 per cent of total public expenditure for education.
According to him, Kaduna State allocated 25 per cent of its total budget to education in 2024; 26.14 per cent in 2025 and another 25 per cent of its N985.9 billion 2026 budget, amounting to approximately N246.5 billion, to the education sector.
“For three consecutive years, therefore, Governor Uba Sani has committed about one-quarter of Kaduna State’s annual budget to education,” he disclosed.
The commissioner said the state’s investment had also produced measurable results in basic education, tertiary education and skills development.
Maiyaki said the National Board for Technical Education had recognised three Skills Development and Vocational Training Centres established by Governor Uba Sani as the best-equipped and structured skills training facilities in Nigeria.
The statement added that Kaduna State has reduced its out-of-school children population from more than 550,000 to 187,719 within three years through sustained investments, enrolment campaigns and infrastructure development.
He said the Federal Government had also drawn from the Kaduna model, in developing national interventions on skills training and addressing the out-of-school children challenge.
On the Kaduna State University (KASU), the commissioner said the Uba Sani administration had made several financial interventions, including more than N800 million in staff welfare, about N146 million for withheld salaries and SIWES-related obligations, and a N50 million monthly standing intervention.
The statement added that the government provided more than N200 million in overhead support to the university in 2026 alone and over N300 million for accreditation of 57 academic programmes and resource verification for 60 postgraduate programmes.
The commissioner said the interventions contributed to the full accreditation of seven professional programmes and the university’s Digital Learning Centre.
Maiyaki also disclosed that the administration has committed more than N1.6 billion to scholarships and other student-support programmes, alongside a 50 per cent reduction in tuition fees across state-owned tertiary institutions.
The statement argued that these interventions “are hardly the actions of a government that is ‘lukewarm’ towards education.”
On claims that about 200 professors and other academic staff have resigned from KASU because of poor working conditions, the commissioner challenged those making the allegation to provide evidence.
“Those advancing the claim should provide the names of the alleged 200 academics, their dates of resignation and their stated reasons for leaving. Repetition does not turn an unverified allegation into fact,” he pointed out.
The government recognises the role of the Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU-KASU) in advocating for its members’ welfare, he said, adding that the administration is committed to constructive engagement on genuine outstanding issues.

ASUU Is Misrepresenting Facts—KASU VC
Vice Chancellor of Kaduna State University(KASU), Prof Abdullahi Ibrahim Musa, has refuted the claims of the university’s branch of the Academic Staff Union of Universities(ASUU) that 200 lecturers have resigned due to poor working conditions.
In a statement issued on Tuesday, Prof Ibrahim Musa said that ASUU just manufactured figures as the ‘’ claim is misleading and unsupported by the University's records and should be disregarded by all and sundry.’’
The Vice Chancellor argued that ‘’staff movements arising from resignations, retirements, transfers and pursuit of other professional opportunities are normal within the university system and should not be presented without context, as evidence of deteriorating working conditions.’’
He challenged ASUU to provide verifiable evidence, including the identities of those who allegedly resigned, dates of resignation, and the academics’ reasons for leaving Kaduna State University.
‘’Public discourse concerning an institution as important as KASU must be guided by facts and verifiable records, not sweeping assertions capable of creating unnecessary anxiety among students, parents and the University community,’’ he warned.
The VC pointed out that Governor Uba Sani has cleared the backlog of some salary arrears and has generally enhanced the welfare of both academic and non-academic staff since he assumed office.
‘’Over the last three years, the administration has released over ₦800 million for staff welfare, in addition to ₦146 million to clear withheld salaries and outstanding SIWES allowances inherited from previous administrations.
‘’KASU has consequently cleared these inherited withheld salary obligations, demonstrating Government's resolve to address longstanding staff welfare issues,’’ the Vice Chancellor disclosed.
The statement revealed that the Kaduna State Government, the University Management, and the KASU branch of ASUU have also established a ₦50 million monthly standing intervention to support the University.
‘’In 2026 alone, Government has further disbursed over ₦200 million in overhead funding to support day-to-day operations, including laboratory chemicals and reagents, students' field trips, examinations and other essential academic activities,’’ Prof Musa added.
According to him, Kaduna State Government ‘’has equally invested over ₦300 million in the accreditation of more than 57 academic programmes and resource-verification exercises for 60 postgraduate programmes by the National Universities Commission (NUC).
‘’The University has also secured full accreditation for seven professional programmes from relevant regulatory bodies, including those responsible for Nursing and Midwifery and Physiotherapy, as well as full accreditation for its newly established Digital Learning Centre,’’ he added.
The VC pointed out that KASU's academic and research capacity has now expanded significantly, with the establishment of 14 research centres and two specialised institutes, including the Digital Learning Institute, to advance multidisciplinary research, innovation, professional development and knowledge transfer.
‘’The University has also introduced professional development initiatives, including long-vacation training programmes for teachers and other professionals. KASU also secured a ₦1 billion competitive TETFund grant for commercial agriculture
‘’The University's researchers have attracted seven high-profile international research grants in the last three years, alongside several national and institutional grants, reflecting the growing competitiveness of KASU's research community,’’ he added.

Resident Doctors Commend Governor Uba Sani for Prioritising Welfare, Remuneration, and Healthcare Infrastructure
The Nigerian Association of Resident Doctors (NARD) has lauded the Executive Governor of Kaduna State, Senator Uba Sani, for his administration's sustained commitment to upgrading the healthcare sector and improving the working conditions of medical doctors.
In a communiqué released at the end of its July 2026 National Executive Council (NEC) meeting in Gombe, the national body of resident doctors singled out Governor Uba Sani for prioritising the welfare of medical practitioners within Kaduna State.
According to NARD, Governor Sani's strategic interventions have delivered targeted improvements in:
- Remuneration: Enhancing the financial package and entitlements for resident doctors.
- Healthcare Infrastructure: Upgrading facility standards and medical equipment across state health centres.
- Manpower Development & Working Conditions: Facilitating continuous training and fostering a safer, conducive working environment for medical professionals.
Commending these achievements, NARD urged other state governors across the federation to emulate Governor Uba Sani's leadership model in order to strengthen healthcare delivery nationwide and address manpower challenges in the medical sector.
