In 1938, Brazil started banning the German language in Blumenau.

Today that same city throws the biggest German festival in the Americas.

German settlers founded Blumenau in 1850, in Santa Catarina, in the south of Brazil.

For generations, families there spoke German at home, at school and in their newspapers.

Then President Getúlio Vargas launched a campaign to make everyone in Brazil speak only Portuguese.

German schools were closed, German newspapers stopped printing, and families were banned from speaking the language, even at home.

Many parents stopped teaching their children the language their grandparents brought across the ocean.

In the 1970s, city leaders started planning a festival to bring that heritage back into the open.

Then the Itajaí-Açu River flooded the city four times in 1983.

On August 7th, 1984, the river rose to 15.46 meters, more than 50 feet.

Many people think the festival was invented to cheer the city up after the floods, but the plan was already on the table.

Two months after that flood, on October 5th, 1984, the first Oktoberfest opened anyway, and 102,000 people walked in.

By 1988, more than 1 million people came in a single year.

Last year, 689,201 people came, and the festival handed the city a record R$12 million profit.

This year's edition runs October 7th to 25th, with a parade tomorrow morning for the October 12th holiday.

Brazil once tried to silence German in Blumenau, and the city answered by turning it into the party that fills its streets every October.

No tenemos tiempo para tener hijos
Hay otras que se levantan tranquilamente y llevan a sus hijos al colegio, y luego se van al parque a descansar
Y el dia 10 van al banco a cobrar una ayuda que le pagamos los que trabajamos
A mi no me parece normal

Has there ever been a time in human history when the rulers of a people have allowed foreign, illegal, military aged male invaders into their lands, housed them up and down the country in close proximity to the native population in every city and town, and then even after those invaders have raped, murdered, abused and stolen from the native population the rulers have given them lenient sentences and allowed them to remain on the land, while the native population that tries to fight back is treated as the real danger and gets completely hammered by the state?
