@nataliegwinters One of the counties in WV is where I grew up. There are pretty much zero jobs or industry there, and next to zero housing. It also is isolated with terrible winters. What on earth are immigrants going to do there? Collect welfare and live where?
@DeclassifiedNow@thisilldue@ashatku Proton 3 Lithium announced in August that they have discovered 531 million tons of potash in Nevada. If the government wants to fast track mining, they will make it happen relatively quickly.
@TheOChammer@JoinCrowdHealth@ZubyMusic Private MRI clinics in most metro areas are dirt cheap cash pay compared to hosp. system. Also, my cash price for a script that I need is $45, my insurance copay if using is $175. Always ask private pay price 1st.
One misunderstanding about Emily Dickinson is that she was a frail shut-in who hid her poems in a drawer. She corresponded widely with other writers and poets, knew her neighbors well, and was known as a poet in her time despite publishing only a few poems in newspapers.
She distributed her poems through correspondence. She wanted to be read. She was DIY before DIY.
Another misunderstanding, popular in academia, is that she was a lesbian with a smoldering, unrequited passion for her sister-in-law, but there is no proof of that.
Literate people in the 19th century wrote to each other with an affection that sounds strange, intense, even infatuated today. Her letters are not evidence that she was a lesbian.
And yet another misunderstanding is that her best-known poems, the ones anthologized and shared on social media, are representative of her entire body of work. Many of those poems have been sanitized and stripped of their power. Editors have made them look more like normal "verse" by changing the punctuation to conform to convention and running spell check.
Her work was complex in every way, from her syntax and strange rhymes to her rich diction and subject choices (death, nature, psychological anguish, religious doubt, and love).
She was a powerhouse of a poet, not a dainty versifier who never got any sunlight.
@DataRepublican@RetardDecoder The whiplash I have from Josh Shapiro making data centers his ultimate priority even 9 mos ago to his stance now is jaw-dropping. My husband is an engineer doing municipal work- Shapiro directed fast-tracking all the permits, especially DEP ones that can take years.
@davidhughes_phd Some of this can also be traced back to schools no longer teaching/requiring some memorization. A lot of the old guard 30 yr + teachers that I work with hate that it left. It taught/exercised a brain skill.
@StarvinLarry@PolitiBunny I grew up in Tucker County, and I could never move back, even though it is beautiful, and I love it fiercely. I've become spoiled by not having to drive 1/2 hr to 1 hour to get things. Also, your kid will miss weeks of school because of the winter weather.
@Kidar182 3 Proton Lithium's recent discovery in NV includes 533 million tons of potash. If the government decides to make mining it a priority, will fast-track the process
@BlaireWhite Now evidence has surfaced from newspapers of the time that the lone holdout was a male. She's even quoted as saying the defendant was guilty (maiden name). The mind boggles.
@daniela__127 NYT didn't approve my comment, but I said I was bewildered ahow a parent could knowingly sacrifice their child's education on the altar of social justice, especially when the parents acknowledged their good fortune in attending decent schools. No wonder her daughter resents her.
@entylawyer Beloved of teenaged girls because it didn't stain when you a) spilled it on yourself, or b) threw up in your boyfriend's '83 Toyota Celica.
@paytonsun My husband was not a Bears fan, but he loved watching your dad play. One of the first things he bought when he got a job after college was a WP rookie card-$100 in 1989. Sent it off to get graded this spring, bc he wants to display on an easel. Only card he would never sell.
@teenmd@lyft My brother has been profoundly deaf since meningitis at the age of 10. He knows 0 sign language, as my parents sent him to a school for the deaf that didn't teach it (on purpose).
