This would be a very welcome development for Kenya and the region. A refinery of this scale would create thousands of jobs, attract major foreign investment, strengthen energy security, expand exports hence further strengthening our shilling, and position Kenya as a serious industrial and petrochemical hub in Africa. Personally, I hope such a refinery is built in Lamu because of its strategic port position and the opportunity to finally unlock the economic potential of the LAPSSET corridor.

As you go to church today, pray that this happens, and that it happens in our lifetime. Projects of this scale can take years to conceptualize and execute.

I've also been escorted by old boys of Ramba and St Mary's Yala, who begged me to take them to the Equator to experience what it means to study in the Northern Hemisphere and sleep in the Southern Hemisphere. I've asked the photographer to ensure they take a photo along the Equator line cutting through the school.

If they behave well I might consider handing over this souvenir Maseno School blazer to one of them for keeps.

If they don't, I'll take it to my father's museum in Kolenyo.

For 120 years, Maseno has been producing the type of students who read novels for fun, debate teachers for sport, and treat academic excellence like a birthright.

While other schools produce candidates that celebrate mean grades. Maseno produces Cabinet Secretaries, professors, judges, diplomats, blue chip CEOs, and those people who correct your English before disagreeing with you. The school assembly you see here sound like a United Nations symposium with hymn books.

Tomorrow, State House is simply making a courtesy call to the cradle of academic excellence. The President will not just be attending a celebration; he will be entering a 120-year-old institution that has quietly convinced millions of Kenyans that wearing that that navy-blue blazer automatically raises your IQ by 17 points.

If you’re coming to the celebrations tomorrow, kindly note that the Kisumu–Busia Highway will resemble an economic stimulus package on wheels. Traffic officers will be overwhelmed, Google Maps will start questioning life choices, and every third person will claim they “once studied near Maseno.”

Should you get lost in the maze while inside the school compound, all you need will be to blink twice and our Geography department will send someone to you with a map to Jacob's Well.
