during her first audition, the director showed her footage of all the other competitors. xu ruohan was under so much pressure she almost exploded and cried all the way home: “i'm not as good-looking as them, i don't have experience, and i didn't major in acting... what should i do?”

from initially arming herself by act fierce, to building genuine self-confidence, how did xu ruohan come to shine brightly?

💬: do you ever feel like you want to play a role that has a huge contrast with yourself?

🐱: because actually, i started out doing modern dramas and playing very sweet characters, so people might sometimes think, “oh, she’s just suited for romance rolesl but actually, before this, i played cheng yushan in the hope, which was my first step into contrasting roles. then the second contrasting role was actually ye chunchun. she’s a dancer who goes out drinking and accompanying people to dance every day, but she’s very upright. she earns money through her own work, i feel she’s someone with a very strong female consciousness.

later, i also took on 一路灿烂. actually, in 一路灿烂 —my characher is a disabled person, a disabled person who was bullied at school. i feel I can confidently say that from then until now, there hasn’t been a high degree of overlap among the characters i’ve played. every character is different—her personality is different, and her story is different.

because sometimes people often encounter a situation where if you perform well in a certain role, they'll keep offering you the same kind of role, saying, “you should just play this, this is your comfort zone” but i feel my comfort zone isn’t defined by others. maybe i did well in something, but i won’t play a second shen xifan, because the me of that year presented herself in that way. two or three months later, or a year later, i’ve completely changed. we aren’t the same person we were a second ago. so i won't take on roles that are almost identical to what i’ve done before. i’d rather act more, and after acting, wait until later to discover what i truly like and what i’m truly good at, rather than letting others define where my comfort zone is.

💬: i feel that in every one of your dramas, the positioning of your character is different—basically, you’re constantly stepping outside your original character framework. how do you choose your work?

🐱: i’m really grateful to my team. because when we first started working together, we actually reached a consensus about this. i hoped that we wouldn’t just repeat what I'd done before or retrace old steps, because you can't possibly do better than your previous self. the reason you were able to get that role, be loved by everyone, and make that character shine was because of who you were at that time, the team you had back then, and your mindset at that moment.

but as you grow, you can’t go back to that. so they also feel, “then i’ll choose a role you can accomplish at your current stage” we won’t look backward, nor will we look too far ahead—we just look at the present. so when they take on roles now, they discuss it with me based on what they feel suits me best right now.

a while ago, pingjun mama, xuruohan, was filming in hangzhou. xiao yu’er brought along some biscuits he had baked himself to go see her. the two hadn’t seen each other for half a year, but they were both doing well. and whenever there was some free time, they’d immediately start chatting.
