In 1997, two friends working as accountants in Abu Dhabi were inspired by a classmate to pursue CPA certification. Despite financial challenges and visa concerns, they enrolled in a CPA exam preparation course and were granted US visas. After intense preparation, they successfully passed the CPA exam in May 1998/1999, transforming their careers and lives.

Mahmoud Abu Foul was detained by Israel after the military stormed Kamal Adwan Hospital in Gaza last December.

Now, after being freed as part of the ceasefire deal between Hamas and Israel, he recalls the 'torture' he suffered in a detention centre that he says caused him to lose his eyesight.

SNBS Hosts Swiss Delegation to Strengthen Statistical Cooperation

Today, SNBS Director General, Dr. Abdisalam Mohamed, welcomed a high-level delegation from Switzerland at the Bureau’s offices in Mogadishu. The delegation which included key officials from Switzerland’s Africa Division and International Cooperation team, engaged in productive discussions on the progress and future improvements of Somalia’s national statistical system.

The DG provided a comprehensive update on SNBS’s achievements, ongoing initiatives and long-term plans to enhance data quality and reliability. He highlighted the Bureau’s significant strides in transforming Somalia’s statistical infrastructure, to guarantee cross-sectoral data-driven decision-making. The DG also expressed appreciation for Switzerland’s steadfast support in advancing Somalia’s statistical capabilities.

Switzerland has been a key partner in Somalia’s statistical development. The visiting delegation commended SNBS’s efforts and reaffirmed their commitment to strengthening collaboration. Both sides expressed confidence that this enduring partnership will continue to evolve, driving innovation and excellence in Somali statistics.

The Swiss delegation included Leo, Deputy Head of the Africa Division; Martina Durrer, Regional Head of International Cooperation for the Horn of Africa; Aurelie, Desk Officer for the Horn of Africa, as well as Cyprian Nyamweno and Wangechi, Program Officers for Governance and Health, respectively. @AbdisalamHumbul @abdirahm_omar @SwissEmbassyKE @SwissDevCoop
