In "Soir Bleu," Edward Hopper's anxiety about his career takes the form of a sad clown smoking a cigarette. Painted in 1914, four years after his last trip to Paris, "Soir Bleu" was created during a period of professional disillusionment for Hopper. He painted "Soir Bleu" in New York in 1914 after visiting Paris four years prior. The painting offers a glimpse of Parisian life from an outsider's perspective. Unlike most of his other artworks featuring cityscapes or landscapes, "Soir Bleu" focuses more on the human subjects who all appear to be French but are very different from one another.
On the far left is a working-class man wearing a hat and smoking a cigarette. In the background, outside of the café, is a sex-worker looking at the other subjects, perhaps searching for her next client. The clown or pierrot is in the center of the painting, sharing a table with two other gentlemen engaged in conversation. The one sitting behind the pole always reminds me of Vincent van Gogh. On the far right, we can see a well-dressed couple who belong to the bourgeoisie.
Hopper visited Paris during a time of optimism, peace, and economic prosperity. Despite this, there is a distinct sense of melancholy and sadness that pervades his painting. Or perhaps it is the feeling of calm just before the impending doom and destruction that is to come with the beginning of World War 1.
