There is no single benefit of doing NYSC that justifies the security risks involved. The scheme should be seriously scrapped.
Corpers currently receive ₦77k monthly, which is ₦924,000 a year.
From that same ₦77k, you’re expected to pay rent, feed yourself, save up money, buy fuel, pay electricity bills, transport yourself and handle other basic expenses.
And on top of all that, you’re exposed to the risk of kidnapping, with families sometimes facing ransom demands running into tens of millions of naira.
How is this sustainable?
This is Squadron Leader Ahamefule Man-Ugwueje, the pilot identified in initial reports as one of the crew of the Nigerian Air Force ATR-42 aircraft that crashed in Igbokoda, Ondo State, on October 5, 2026.
Man-Ugwueje, son of retired Group Captain Man-Ugwueje, had just gotten married on September 19th to his wife, Flight Lieutenant Damilola Adekunle, daughter of the late Wing Commander O.E. Adekunle. Both families have a long history of military service.
Tragically, just over two weeks after their wedding, while the couple was still on their honeymoon, he died in active service to his country.
Sqn Ldr Ugwueje was among the 32 persons on board the aircraft — 25 passengers and 7 crew members — who lost their lives in the crash. He is survived by his young wife, parents, and family. God comfort them, and give him rest!
Eyewitness Account Suggests Pilot Tried to Evade Ground Collision by Landing in Water - Ilodigwe
The crash of the Nigeria Air Force aircraft in Ondo State was traumatic for many residents, who described seeing the aircraft flying at a very low altitude, almost hitting the roofs of their buildings, before heading quickly toward the swamp. Upon impact, residents said they went to rescue any survivors, but all they could see were personal belongings floating to the surface. With a Naval Base very close to the crash site, one wonders if the pilot noticed issues with the aircraft and looked for the nearest base to land the plane in an attempt to save lives.

ETIM ETIM: "It is so embarrassing for the military and the nation as a whole to lose so many well trained officers and resources to these crashes. What could be the problem? Is it poor maintenance, age of the aircraft or human factor? While the NCAA and other regulatory agencies in civilian aviation have worked hard to achieve zero accident involving commercial jetliner in the country in the last 14 years, the military continues to suffer catastrophic accidents almost on a yearly basis. It’s so bad that a chief of army staff was killed in one of those crashes in 2021. We cannot continue to lose senior military personnel to these senseless air accidents. This has to stop. The latest in the series of these military crashes occurred on Monday, October 5, 2026, and it involved a Nigerian military surveillance and maritime operations aircraft (tail number NGR 931) carrying an estimated 32 people (25 passengers and 7 crew) en route from Lagos to Benin. It crashed in Igbokoda, Ilaje, triggering a search and rescue operation by the Nigerian Air force. My thoughts and prayers are with those on board and their families. I honestly hope that the crew and passengers are alright. As I wish for the best, one question continues to bother me. Why has Nigeria experienced so many tragic military plane and helicopter crashes in the last few decades resulting in loss of key military leadership, service personnel, and aircraft? And why has no solution been found for this problem?"

We went there with some soldiers hoping to be able to rescue some people, but there was no way to rescue anyone. The plane was already in the swamp. We got some videos showing the v!ctims' properties and b0dy parts."

32 People Aboard Crashed Military Aircraft As Locals, Emergency Services Search Igbokoda
Locals and emergency services are searching the swampy riverine area of Igbokoda, Ondo State, where a military aircraft was reported to have crashed earlier today, after some parts of the aircraft were spotted in the area.
A senior air traffic controller told Punch the Ondo Air Force crash “looks somehow shoddy.”
He says NGR 931 was on radio just after take-off from Benin, then vanished from radar. No contact. Nothing. Until it hit a swamp in Igbokoda.
I’m not buying a conspiracy off that sentence. I’m also not waving it away.
My thoughts and prayers are with the Nigerian Air Force.
I was deeply saddened to learn of the crash involving a Nigerian Air Force aircraft.
I offer my sincere condolences to the Nigerian Air Force, the families of the officers and personnel who perished, and their colleagues and loved ones during this difficult time.
These courageous men and women devote their lives to defending our nation and safeguarding our people. Their service and sacrifice must never be overlooked.
I pray that God grants eternal rest to those who have departed, consolation to their families, and strength to the Nigerian Air Force and the entire Armed Forces of Nigeria.
May God continue to watch over all who serve our country and protect them as they carry out their duties. -PO
