@julia_hornstein@johnofa@nytopinion Let's not forget the Anthropic AI safety researcher who quit and moved back to the UK to "become invisible" with a plan to pursue a poetry degree, writing, and community building. Ya know, more human stuff.
It's good to finally see a VC insider call out the AI leaders for using the crypto playbook to go after any politicians running who could "hamper" their "innovation" runway. Agree that it won't work now, when ppl are personally experiencing the affects of AI on their lives.
Here's the full show. I really hope we'll look back on 2025 and think of it as an anomalous transition year when these psychosis and suicide issues were at their worst, and I'm glad that so far there doesn't seem to be a noticeable statistical increase in mental health issues. But I don't think we can assume we're out of the woods yet.

I know AI sycophancy is about 17,000 discourse cycles ago on this site, but IMO the underlying dynamics (inc pressure to ship fast, not knowing how to balance user prefs w/ other things) are alive and well.
Wasn't expecting to explain that to Oprah of all people, but here we are
It's easy to turn to a subsidization model like Uber. To equal the expense of AI to ride share would put drivers costing Uber $50K per driver a day. What AWS spent in capex over multiple years Anthropic spent in 1 year.
Really grateful that @chrislhayes and @MSNOWNews gave me the space to talk about the unsustainable economics of AI, subsidized subscriptions, and why generative AI is nothing like Uber or Amazon Web Services.
@JoannaStern OMG is he really blaming social media algorithms for the fear? For the reality young people face whose entry-level job potential is vanishing? The ppl in communities where water is being extracted by data centers? No wonder they’re booing. He’s insulting their intelligence.
Hawaii just enacted a law that effectively neuters Citizens United.
Montana could soon follow suit via a ballot referendum.
Here's what you should know about the plans to get Big Money out of politics — and how they could be replicated where you live.
🤦🏾♀️Absolutely not. You REALLY want ChatGPT to have access to your BANK ACCOUNTS? Your investment accounts? We're intentionally NOT uploading PII for a reason. There is no guarantee of privacy and security. This isn't on-prem, enterprise AI integration where there's control.
A preview for Pro users: a new personal finance experience in ChatGPT.
Pro users in the U.S. can securely connect financial accounts, see where their money is going, and ask questions based on the information they choose to connect.
Your full financial picture, now in ChatGPT.
This is GLORIOUS
David Letterman & Stephen Colbert on the roof of the Ed Sullivan Theatre bringing back the classic @Letterman routine one last time
This is how you go out, @StephenAtHome! 😂
And may @CBS implode literally the same way without you
@GaryMarcus Also hilarious to learn from this Musk vs OpenAI trial that Musk doesn't know what safety cards are. The same guy who was so scared of Hassabis getting to AGI first and who leads an AI company with arguably the weakest level of safety guardrails.
@paulroetzer Is there a meme coin “transaction fee” involved in this vetting process? Also, “We can’t stop it with foolish rules and even stupid rules.” Rules like labeling an American AI company a supply-chain risk?
Yesterday, a federal judge barred Elon Musk's lawyers from arguing that AI could threaten humanity in his lawsuit against OpenAI.
OpenAI was founded as a nonprofit focused on developing AI safely. But our recent @NewYorker investigation documented how some researchers at the company have raised concerns about safety being sidelined.
@paulroetzer His arguments are pretty weak in this clip. Not only are CEOs not listening to each other, they're completely disconnected from the plight of workers. In this AI race that started years ago, winning is the core priority. Everything else takes a back seat.
We need all of this 👇🏽 AND - a default on social media that they will NOT use UGC to train AI OR to "remix" with AI for content in their likeness by default, i.e. what's happening on TikTok. Content creators are going thru tons of videos, opting out 1 by 1, and it reverts back.
The next phase of anti-LGBTQ+ targeting is technological: surveillance of people seeking care, algorithmic discrimination, and weaponization of personal data. I'm prepared to lead on these issues from day one.
“We lay out the most detailed account yet of why Altman was ousted out by board members and executives…” Appreciate Farrow’s reporting in general but a lot in this story is in @_KarenHao’s book “Empire of AI.”
(🧵1/11) For the past year and a half, I've been investigating OpenAI and Sam Altman for @NewYorker. With my coauthor @andrewmarantz, I reviewed never-before-disclosed internal memos, obtained 200+ pages of documents related to a close colleague, including extensive private notes, and interviewed more than 100 people.
OpenAI was founded on the premise that A.I. could be the most dangerous invention in human history—and that its C.E.O. would need to be a person of uncommon integrity. We lay out the most detailed account yet of why Altman was ousted out by board members and executives who came to believe he lacked that integrity, and ask: were they right to allege that he couldn't be trusted?
A thread on some of of our findings:
@TomSteyer 100% Eric Swalwell is HIGHLY problematic, and not just for taking AIPAC money. Not a "yes" for Porter either, btw. BUT hiring Maya Handa and 💰 can't erase that you're a billionaire who got rich through the suffering of others, including children, and polluting the planet.
