Why Storming State House is a Thoughtless Gamble:

The call to #OccupyStateHouse2025 reeks of déjà vu—and not the good kind. Last year’s attempt to storm the State House never even got off the drawing board.

As plans circulated online, key organizers publicly balked, fracturing the movement before it could mobilize more than a handful of protesters.

Far from rattling the establishment, the episode only underscored how ill-conceived a forceful occupation really is.

Today, any group that thought to replicate last year’s gamble will find their path blocked long before they assemble, and their numbers circled by riot police before they can chant their first slogan.

It’s tempting to pin blame for last year’s non-event on diffuse leadership or widespread confusion due fallouts among the organizers. But hindsight reveals a more telling culprit: Rigathi Gachagua.

In 2024, the impeached DP wielded dangerously immense power, was dangerously ambitious to attain more and appeared ostensibly willing to dangerously influence events in his favour.

Yet he failed to galvanize real traction or coordinate any meaningful strategy to occupy the State House.

If DP Gachagua in 2024, with privileged access and the cloak of officialdom, couldn’t turn talk into action and dream into reality, it’s fantasy to imagine he’ll now conjure a State House occupation only armed with the theatrics of cousins & the Wantam hashtag.

Beyond these theatrics, hashtags & flash mobs, lies a harder truth: change in Kenya’s presidency has never, and will never, come from a siege on State House, a forced barricade or such attempts at extrajudicial takeovers.

It’s not in contest that we have a history of bitter contestation of election results, and no election was ever perfect. Yet each transition ultimately respected the will of the people as expressed in the voting booth.

The only way to unseat an incumbent government is through a civic engagement: voter education, candidate debates, and peaceful rallies that galvanize public opinion ahead of an election.

Attempting to forcefully occupy State House might make for dramatic livestreams, but it won’t install a new president. Those powers reside firmly in the ballot box.

Kenya’s future doesn’t lie in storming legislative chamber or seats of power; it lies in lining up at polling stations, in the solemn act of casting a vote.

Moreover, if the 2022 election taught us anything, it’s that the armed might of the state is no match for an unarmed electorate harnessing the power of democracy.

So, spare us the pie-in-the-sky call of #OccupyStateHouse2025. If you believe in change, believe in ballots — not barricades.
