New York resident says squatters are still being allowed to take over properties

The squatter at this home has a car, uses the property owner’s water to wash his car, he’s using his electricity to run a business out of a van, to power his TV in the vehicle

The homeless man squatting doing all this can’t be removed

This is a real and frustrating problem in New York

After 30 days of occupancy, squatters could claim tenant-like rights even without permission or a lease

To remove these people, Police often still demand court orders to avoid liability or mistakes. Court delays are common

Here’s the crazy part

Self-help is illegal. Owners cannot change locks, shut off utilities like water and electricity, or remove belongings without risking arrest for “unlawful eviction”

@WallStreetApes Since when is b&e considered squatting. If I return from vacation and someone has set up fort in an area of my home, and they were NEVER a tenant by ANY means, that's b&e. If this is unbeknownst to me, I have the right to approach in a threatening and possibly deadly way, right?

@MSNOWNews Why wasn't 47 taken off stage as fast as the VP was snatched up? His detail should have had him covered and out at the sound of gunfire. He wasn't moved until SWAT ran up. Also, why wasn't guests checked, invited or not? If everyone was checked, it's looking like an inside job.

NYU owns a good portion of the West Vil, real estate isn't cheap and there definitely isn't low income ppl living down there. They should have NEVER allowed a public snowball fight!

There are high profile ppl who attend that College, one being Baron Trump, and just the fact that it's a populated area that needs attending to. If only this had been 15-20yrs!
