Today on the housing crisis: when someone is asking for housing assistance in a break lease page and the top comment is giving tips on making the most of being homeless #brisbanehousing#auspol
@kirk_osaurus From what I can from the rental groups I joined on FB out of desperation, yes. There were a lot of posts from people desperately trying to find accomodation in lots of outer suburbs
@tomkitten54 If I wasn’t on leave and was trying to go to 6+ inspections a day while working full time I would have had a breakdown. Looking for a house has been more than full time hours if you include how glued to https://t.co/3JBQk2p85S you are. It’s paralysing. So glad you found a place!
@libslayer1917 Yes, its very reasonable to have to move away from my job, support network and friends because I can’t stay in the home I’ve lived in for 5 years through no fault of my own
@terencecarter That is so stressful. The power dynamic means tenants can’t fight back, and if they do end up being asked to leave (which is why I’m leaving my current rental). I can only speak for Brisbane, but I’m hearing so many similar stories from all across the country.
@K_to_the_T_ @nolikeybake The landlord that owns my current rental has 63 properties in total so I don’t think he’s raised my rent due to not being able to afford his mortgage repayments, he’s just a bit of a douche frankly. Thanks for the solidarity ✊
@kellulz I had someone show up to my house this morning while I was sleeping because she didn’t get the message that the inspection had been cancelled, and then asked me desperately if I knew how to help her find something else
Lastly, how many vacant apartments and Airbnbs are there sitting empty at the moment? We need more affordable housing, we need freeze on rent increases and we need a vacancy tax on empty properties
I luckily now have a place lined up through a friend, but what do people without friends with vacant apartments do? I can’t imagine going through this process if English was my second language
