Karoline Leavitt is getting glowing reviews of her performance as press secretary when she dodged, attacked, and obfuscated for the most part. A few examples of the lies we heard: claiming the US spent $50M on condoms for Gaza, calling the Epstein files a 'hoax,' denying war plans were shared with Jeffrey Goldberg over Signal, branding Abrego Garcia a gang member with zero evidence, and insisting America is more affordable under Trump.
That's not a press secretary doing her job well. That's demeaning the press and calling the public insane for noticing the gaslighting.
Susan Collins cast the deciding vote for 19 of Trump’s most dangerous nominees. When she has the power to tank them? Zero.
Her no votes are for show. Her yes votes are for Trump. Mainers are done. Vote her out.
🚨 BREAKING:
One hour after announcing his resignation, U.S. Joint Chiefs Chairman General Randy George reportedly said:
"Donald Trump should be hospitalized immediately; I doubt his mental fitness. He is leading the U.S. military toward disaster."
APPLEBAUM: I think Trump genuinely believed that he was friends with Putin, and that that’s how he would bring the war to an end.
Trump was very surprised to learn that Russians have different set of interests, bigger than him, that he wasn’t able to influence Putin.
So I think it’s fair to say it’s pretty clear that Trump doesn’t understand or know Russia, or Putin, very well.
And unfortunately, negotiations that Trump conducted with Russians in first part of his term were very counterproductive.
They gave Russians idea that Americans would let them keep fighting, would get Ukrainians to give up their territory.
Putin was never seriously interested in ending the war. We’ve never seen any sign that he’s willing to accept ceasefire.
If Trump had come to power and said, “I’m going to continue to support Ukraine, I want Ukraine to win the war.”
Then this war might be over by now, because this war will be over when Russians understand that they can’t win.
When Russians finally understand that Ukraine will not become a Russian colony, and that it’s not worth fighting.
Most colonial wars last about 10 years. Whether you think this started in 2014 or 2022, you could be optimistic or pessimistic.
It’s also true that most colonial wars are eventually ended not by the person who started them. Algeria is a good example.
Most colonial wars also end with turmoil in capital. Once you understand it’s colonial war, then you know what’s at stake.
Reporter asks Zohran Mamdani's former political opponent, Curtis Sliwa, what he thinks about the campaign to stop Mamdani from attending the 9/11 ceremony: “Ridiculous. He’s the mayor. Stop being sore losers.”
All Elon does is buy his way into something and take it over. He isn't an innovator. He isn't even intelligent. He's just an egotistical asshole with a shit ton of money.
The belief that rejecting decades of evidence makes you a critical thinker may be one of the strangest intellectual inversions of the social media age.
We have confused distrust with intelligence, contrarianism with skepticism, and confidence with expertise.
If capitalism is so great, why do corporations need so many tax breaks, subsidies, exemptions, grants, legal protections, bailouts, and trade protections?
When citizens need these things, why is it socialism?
Why would Trump remove federal reporting requirements this week mandated in a law authored by Marco Rubio in 2020 to identify domestic and international sex traffickers, money launderers and terrorists, and will Rubio comment on it?
Stavros Halkias: I don't wanna do the both sides bullshit because it's just not true. One side is worse than the other, objectively speaking. One side is disappearing people and one side wants children to have healthcare, I don't think that's equivalent. A lot of stand up comics happened to have some of the dumbest opinions on Earth
Sixteen million children.
Say that number out loud before you scroll. Sixteen million kids in this country get their groceries through a program Republicans just gutted by $187 billion.
They knew. They did it anyway. VOTE THEM OUT #RepublicansStarveUS
The prosecutor who was investigating these CIA strikes was murdered. One of the boats is still missing. Survivors of the other two strikes say they were tortured before being dumped in El Salvador. All 3 craft were licensed commercial vessels cleared by Ecuadorian authorities and there is no indication they were engaged in drug trafficking. This is a scandal and horror of epic proportions.
Americans are relearning the lesson we learned during the Gilded Age of the late 1890s, when robber barons ran the government and the economy for their own benefit: Oligarchy is incompatible with the common good.
I'm hopeful we'll respond with a new progressive movement.
