I think it's interesting that "being a man" looks different in different situations. Sometimes it's more about being aggressive and dominant, and other times it can mean not showing any emotion #so345
And it's hard to get rid of that label with the constant policing, even when they aren't doing anything wrong. They just fall victim to everyone's views. 2/2 #so345
I feel like this chapter relates to what we talked about at the beginning of the semester about master status. All these boys are being told that they are criminals and dangerous by their teachers and police. 1/2 #so345
Jose joined a gang to protect himself from gang victimization. It's really sad to think that this was the only way to have a sense of safety in the neighborhood. #so345
"...the officer laughed at him and told him, 'I got better things to do'" (54). When Jose needed help, the police didn't see that as an opportunity to do something. What was the "better thing to do"? Wait to stop someone for looking suspicious? #so345
If the US were to take action and make housing, food, clothes, and other necessities more affordable, do you think the amount of people who shoplifted would decrease? And would the number of people incarcerated also decrease? #so345
Society has deemed certain people outcasts and decided that the only place for them is prison. Homeless people, POC, and mentally ill people don't receive the help they need and instead get locked up for petty crimes or charges. #so345
The more people are in prisons, the more the state and government profit. I think that is why they are over-policing certain communities so they can incarcerate more people and have the cycle continue of patrol, prisoner, and profit. #so345
Prison was never used as a place for rehabilitation or reflection in the US. It just punishes and exploits people for as long as possible and turns the prison into an industrial complex. #so345
The more I've grown up, the more I've realized that the "bad" parts of a city are only called that because that is where the police find crime. But they only find it because they target and look for it there. And cops will search residents whenever they want #so345
The expenses and resources used to police skid row could be used to help those people or go towards another shelter to house them. It is costing so much for the police to arrest people who can't escape their situation, why don't they try to help? #so345
The body camera that police wear almost acts as a panopticon. But for both them and either prisoners (if they are in a jail), or a person they are speaking with. #so345
I feel like as I grew up 'the police' started to mean something different to me. It, at one point, was safety, then 'watchers', and now they are associated with conservative people and brutality. #so345
After reading this book, it made me think a lot about the process of labeling something as deviant and how it can change so fast. I can not stop thinking about how earlier this summer bud light was labeled deviant and some people avoid it like the plague. #so345
When self-help groups were being discussed in ch. 9 to aid in ending stigmas around certain behaviors, I began to think, to what extent, is joining these groups also deviant? Alcoholics Anonymous remains anonymous for a reason. #so345
@ro42103 It really feels like there is a line between coming out "enough", and taking it too far and making your sexuality your whole personality. Like what do people want from them? They don't have to share anything, especially not with someone who makes them feel bad. #so345
Reading this kind of reminded me of how movies and TV shows will have a character who is gay, but make it so stereotypical that it is just a caricature which reinforces the belief that "if you don't act like this, you aren't gay" #so345
@ro42103 I agree since sometimes people say some of those words not even as an insult. Like 'bitch' can be changed in the context it is used in, but I hear it a lot now in an encouraging kind of way. #so345
Since middle school, I've had severe anxiety and I had a 504 plan that allowed me to go to a different room for tests. But after leaving a few times, people would make comments about how I didn't actually need it so I stopped going because of the judgment #so345
