@RavenPresser @PigeonMasha_ @CarlBovisNature They make a sound a bit like “Auk”, which is useful as they are a type of auk. I have a turtle dove and a thrush like this, I think they’re pretty accurate but I’m not sure about this one 😆

Neil the seal returns to the same stretch of Tasmanian coast every year, causing mischief, creating viral moments on social media, and driving tourism. This year, as Neil’s fans encroach more and more on his space, officials are considering euthanising him to protect humans who may come too close.

When children visit zoos, aquariums or mobile zoos, they're often told it's educational. But there's another lesson being taught - one that often goes unquestioned.

That it's acceptable to keep animals behind bars, in tanks or in temporary enclosures for our entertainment.

That wild animals exist for us to watch, handle and use.

We believe there's a better lesson to teach - that animals are sentient individuals with their own lives, relationships and interests. They deserve to be respected for who they are, not reduced to exhibits or attractions.

If we want children to truly care about wildlife, we should inspire them to respect the natural world, not accept captivity as normal. True education fosters empathy, curiosity and an understanding of animals in the context of their own lives. And true conservation protects animals in their own wild habitats, rather than displaying them for entertainment behind cages and glass.

@CrowFangs Well I managed to trace the owner, who told me where she was released and her destination, and that he lived in Mansfield (her ‘home’). Unsurprisingly he didn’t want her back, she’d got injured by then as well, no survival instincts of course. She’s now at a nice animal shelter.

Columbiformes (pigeon/dove species) suck water, using their beak as a straw. They have the musculature to reverse pump water into the digestive tract.
Apart from flamingoes, all other bird species use gravity, raising the head so that water trickles down the throat.
