@nonchalantly_@Bugs_Meany its a very strange book, tiers livre is the most sensibly modern but the rest is more related to greek-roman histories and the humor of lucian than to bocaccio or the early novel form. the characterization is very foreign to what we are used to, it is very much a chronicle
@nonchalantly_ something in the realism of DQ and his confrontation with his fiction made english people want to copy it more, though obviously swift takes the island hoppinng of books 4 and 5 in gullivers travels. maybe related to translations, urquhart translates during the english civil war
@nonchalantly_ history of those mileux? or history generally? like getting into the sylvia beach letters? i saw archiebald macleish's letter at the book story yesterday, apparantly pound hated him (presumably for his involvement in the new deal)
@nonchalantly_ the princeton radio research project was on rockefeller foundation money. him and paul lazarsfeld were fighting about the effects of mass media
@cyclicalcastles not what he means at all but i guess i get it for meme purposes. its that film should be generative for novel forms of thought. the whole basis of the cinema books is thinking about bergson
@panoptisean @N0528153849467 i really respect all the top of the charts stuff his knowledge of the direction of pop music and stuff is just crazy, also his "theoretical" stuff about the appeal of various forms of alt rock are interesting, always like what he said about shoegaze being headphone mope music
@RolandGunnTN the christian debates around penance and baptism were hotly contested until like the 900s. only one baptism complicates things if people fall back into sin, which is why you have the rise of confession. but all these things changed meaning and were debated for 1000 years
@nomadykethought hausmann's of paris along with the various bureaucratic projects napoleon iii led probably make him as influential in our daily lives as napoleon. also this guy mischaracterized bismark as a holdout of absolutism as opposed to a revitalization of it following industrialism
