Everyone!

Alright then, let’s roll out the Christmas edition: Christmas... above all, gratitude for this project!

After years on Ronin, where Axies was the only solid game, I’m thankful I stumbled upon this hidden gem.Even though this game is tough to master competitively, doesn’t have the player base it deserves, lacks the promotion it should have, and it’s brutal to push through that onslaught of early (and sometimes ongoing) losses, I’m grateful for this game, this project, and its community.

I’ve always loved how intense shipping became the standard on Ronin. Since that trend has slightly faded over the past year, I’m glad Wild Forest has picked up the baton, still working on and improving the game.

How’s ranked going? How did you play last week?

I’m still enjoying the 2/2/3 format.

Honestly, I’m not a fan of “camping” in ranked. I’ll assume some former or current top Axies players are reading this, so let me ask: how does Axies actually handle “camping” at the top ranks?

If you’re not sure what I mean, here’s the deal: economically, it makes the most sense to play, play, and then stop when you’re on a winning streak to avoid losing points.

The 2/2/3 format is a bit better than the old weekly contest, where tons of people only played on the last day, but it still happens, just on a smaller scale.

Personally, I don’t find this approach to the game fun. Sure, I’d love to maximize rewards too, but for me, it’s way more important to remember this is a game. If I want to improve, I have to face the best players, not dodge them!

I used to aim for top 100. That’s not as big a challenge in the new format. So, did I switch to top 50? Nope. For me, it’s no longer about the rank. What excites me more is beating a player for the first time who I couldn’t touch a few weeks ago. That’s success for me.

Or when I manage to lose more gracefully against elite players. :-D That’s a bigger win than any number on the leaderboard.

Your final rank often comes down to a mix of skill, deck, luck in matchmaking and know when to stop.

And, not least, in such an intense game, your mental state while playing matters a ton.

On this topic, I think I’m an expert:

Day one, I might rack up 80 points. Day two, I face a dilemma—wait or keep playing. I almost always choose to keep playing. Then I end up playing deep into the night because the season ends at noon the next day, and I often lose everything against top scholars with top decks while exhausted. (Rank 118)

Then I tried playing tactically once, holding my ground. Better result, less fun. (Rank 34)

And the third time, it was gaming madness—more fun, fewer rewards, lost it all again, then I just won one a go sleep. (Rank 123)

If anyone reading this has ideas on how to solve this, I’d be super grateful if you’d share. I remember Axies always punished inactivity.
