For instance while the going was good and the marriage of convenience with the Northerners was a rig , Nnamdi Azikiwe said nothing whatsoever publicly about the Tiv riots in order not to annoy the political leaders of the North.
The Coalition Government of 1959 gave a grand opportunity to the Igbo to use Federal Government resources to entrench themselves in key positions and to intensify their education training.
It was an opportunity which the โIbo National Caucusโ, formed not long after the end of the Second World Warโprecisely in 1948โwould not wish to miss. Its aim was summarized in a moment of indiscretion by C. D. Onyeama in the famous utterance at the Island Club, Lagos, โthat the domination of Nigeria by the Ibo is only a question of timeโ
Many observers who watched with interest the establishment of the University of Nigeria in 1960, at a time that the Igbo would not require the services of graduates of such a University, began to suspect that it was a masterly-designed strategy to provide โbackwardโ areas in Northern Nigeria with Igbo personnel.
This measure led their Yorรนbรก rivalsโwho also needed no Universityโ to found the University of Ifรจ.
However the discovery of oil in commercial quantities and the creation of the Mid-West State out of the former Western Region, began to make the Igbo leaders in the Eastern Region say things which their "Northern partners" felt extremely offensive and provocative.
The Premier of the Eastern Region, Dr Michael Okpara, began to threaten secession and began to argue that revenue be allocated according to the principle of derivation.
Needless to say, the Ibo National Caucus decided to exploit the situation in the West to the best advantage.

โEnemies of our fatherland have alerted the decadent Yorรนbรกs and the reactionary Northerners. The indiscreet utterances of many of our own men have contributed largely to the dangers which now beset us when we have almost reached the promised land. These stupid utterances must stopโ.
However, the Caucus believed that the cause was not yet lost:
"Despite the anti-Ibo propaganda now prevailing in the North and West a survey of the situation shows quite clearly that though the situation is critical, it is not hopeless.
In the East despite the amateurish leadership of Okpara the Onitsha Ibo and Ibo dispute has quietened. The Efiks, the Ibibios and the Rivers tribes are still under complete control even though their dreams of their own State have been completely shattered. Despite the intrigues of Okoti-Eboh and Omo Osagie we have succeeded in clamping Osadebay firmly on the Mid-West saddle thus taking care of the Urhobos, the Edos, and the Itshekiris. There is then nothing to fear in the Mid-West but threats. The West is now the Problem."
"Play up Awolowo at all times; this will keep up the resistance of the Action Group members and stop them from uniting with the N.N.D.P. to form a solid Yorรนbรก front. This is vital and there is no longer a headache or danger to us. Intensify all propaganda against Akintola.

@OpeBee Awo was very good and forward thinking especially in governance but politics seems to be his major weakness. Akintola wouldโve hit a deal with Northerners if he was at the helms of affairs in South West then โ SLE seems to be a better politician.
@OpeBee Akintola had advised Awolowo to form a coalition with the north but he refused cuz he thought a southern alignment would be better for some reasons. Itโs true tht PBAT has learnt from the mistakes of AWO.
NYM lowered their tune and allowed Zik to maximize Pilot for propaganda
When parliamentary elections were held in Nigeria on 12 December, 1959. The result was a parliament that had no clear majority to form a government. According to the narrative, Zikโs National Council of Nigeria and Cameroon (NCNC) came first with 2,594,577 votes to get 81 seats.
Awolowoโs Action Group (AG), came 2nd with 1,992, 364 votes to get 73 seats.
However,Sir Ahmadu Belloโs Northern Peopleโs Congress (NPC) came a distant 3rd with 1,922,179 votes to get 134 of the 312 seats in the House of Representatives, despite getting fewer public votes.
The above three major political parties in the election could not get enough seats to form a government so an alliance had to be formed to determine who would rule Nigeria.
It was a no brainer that Zikโs NCNC and Awolowoโs Action Group should make a coalition government as they came first and second respectively.
Chief Awolowo even humbled himself and volunteered to be a deputy prime minister or finance minister in a coalition government with Zik as the Prime Minister. This was because Zikโs NCNC party had more public votes and seats than Awolowoโs Action Group.
Zik invited Awolowoโs team to Asaba, the gateway between the Yorubaโs western region and the Igboโs Eastern region to hold coalition talks.
The talk was a clever ruse to keep Action Group hopes high, so that the party could be kept distracted from meeting with other minor parties for talks. Other junior parties included: Northern Elements Progressive Union with 8 seats: Mobolaje Grand Alliance with 6 seats: Igala Union with 4 seats: Independents Candidate with 4 seats: Igbira Tribal Union with 4 seats and the Niger Delta Congress with 1 seat.
While the Action Group(Awolowo) team was waiting in Asaba for a meeting with the NCNC, they read in the newspapers that Zik and the NCNC had gone up North and clinched a deal with Ahmadu Bello on forming a coalition government with the Northern Peopleโs Congress (NPC).
Tafawa Balewa, from a minority ethnic group in the Northern Nigeria, would be the Prime Minister of Nigeria, while ZIk would be a ceremonial, Governor-General.
Even the President of Ghana, Dr. Nkrumah was shocked. He asked why ZIk, having expended so much energy, โfighting for colonial emancipation, settled for a toothless bulldog role when Nigeria needed him the most?โ.
Again, before the run up to the elections in 1979, Nnamdi Azikiwe had promised chief Awolowo that โhe was not going to run for presidency and would throw his weight behind himโ. This made obafemi Awolowo choose an Igbo man as his running name (Philip Umaedi). Shortly after Awolowo had announced his presidential election, Zik made a U turn and declared for the same position he promised Chief Awolowo he would not contest and picked a northerner as his running mate (Ishaya Audu). What was the result, shagari won the Election by winning 9 states, Awolowo won 5 states and Zik won 3 states( with what was merely wasted votes).
The reality is that, had Zik not reneged on his promise, Awolowo would have had a chance at winning or at the very least force a re run.
Well let me stop here, the rest is history, but certain group of people call Yorubas betrayers. What do they mean?. When and how did the Yorubas betray the SE ?. Who exactly is the betrayer ?
