A month ago I caused a sev when I was out on parental leave. Here’s how it happened.🤰
For a particular service my teams owns, when you merge code into main, it autodeploys to staging but not prod. You then run the integration tests, confirm they all work, and click a little button from the build UI to continue deploying to prod.
If you don’t want to run the integration tests manually, you can just wait and they run on a schedule every so many hours, and alert the team on Slack if they break.
———
This fateful day I had all my necessary approvals, and I merged my code into main toward the end of my day. The image deployed to staging. Instead of running the test suite manually I decided to let the service marinate overnight, and planned to deploy to prod in the morning.
That evening my wife went into labor a week ahead of schedule, and my parental leave started. 👶
A week later a partner team needed to deploy functionality that depended on my new code. They saw that it worked on stage, all tests passed, and pushed it out to prod. 😬
———
When this broke, no one paged or messaged me. They reverted immediately and because I work with a bunch of extremely smart people, it didn’t take them long to figure out the issue.
I had no idea this incident even happened until this week!
I was on a call this week about improving our processes to prevent issues like SEV-XYZ (and others) from happening again and went “wait what was that one” 😅
Not planning on having any more kids though so I think we can close that betterment!
———
Anyway my friends, test on prod.
Reduce the number of manual processes you have. Automate that button click.
Increase the visibility of differences between your environments.
If you’re able to, consider feature flags or canary deployments. Deploy to 1%, measure error rate, increase traffic.
Accept responsibility for failures. Build the kind of blameless culture where people aren’t afraid to accept responsibility for their failures.
Don’t ding people for breaking prod. Failures are rarely attributable to a single individual from start to finish.

he then breathed a sigh of relief and submitted his two weeks' notice. wtf??

CSS "content-visibility:auto" is amazing: skip rendering & painting offscreen content until needed. I got a ~1s faster render on a long HTML document on desktop, ~3s on mobile.
