When I was young, my mother took me to an Ellis island exhibit, and read me this poem. And when she got to the line, “give me your poor,” her voice broke and i watched her tear up.

My mother, who for Christmas, bought a car for $500, got my dad to fix it, filled it with gifts, and gave it to a family she knew who needed one to get to work. My mother who rocked babies born into addiction at The Cradle, and whispered to them they had a future, and prayed they would remember, when they left, that they were loved. My mother who told me the truth about WW2—that America turned children away and didn’t intervene until we were bombed.

There are two visions of who America could become.

There are those who want America to be the “brazen giant of Greek fame, with conquering limbs.” And we have been that version of America many times—the version that tramples bruised reeds and snuffs out smoldering coals.

But there are those who open their arms wide, who “lift their lamp beside the golden door” and seek to offer Liberty and Justice for All.

Today I read the poem again and weep.

“Not like the brazen giant of Greek fame,
With conquering limbs astride from land to land;
Here at our sea-washed, sunset gates shall stand
A mighty woman with a torch, whose flame
Is the imprisoned lightning, and her name
Mother of Exiles. From her beacon-hand
Glows world-wide welcome; her mild eyes command
The air-bridged harbor that twin cities frame.
“Keep, ancient lands, your storied pomp!” cries she
With silent lips. “Give me your tired, your poor,
Your huddled masses yearning to breathe free,
The wretched refuse of your teeming shore.
Send these, the homeless, tempest-tost to me,
I lift my lamp beside the golden door!”

@laurambarringer I don't think your take that they are Christian Nationalists is at all accurate. Their music is their fruit and their music speaks to the antithesis of Christian Nationalism. Lyrically, they play on themes of forgiveness, reconciliation, and inclusion a lot. You should listen!

@JeremyWingert79 @Ineverglow I will say that Breakfast is by far the biggest hit for Newsboys fans. I've been to about 10 different concerts and the Captain Crunch was present at every one and the first few notes of the song brought raucous applause every time. I don't think I ever heard Lost the Plot once..

@shaungroves The majority of the time we get together, however, is a conversation based on the readings, scripture passage, or videos we were assigned as homework throughout the two weeks. The expectation is everyone brings something the Lord has been sharing with them for the group.

@shaungroves No. At least not what people normally think of those terms. On our discipleship nights, someone prepared a short 15 minute message based on a theme (right now we are looking at being secure in God's Family - i.e. what a Christian Community's Relationships look like)
