I’ve been in Brazil for an entire year.

When I first came, it wasn’t some romantic “move to paradise” decision. I’ve lived in 9 different countries over the years. The novelty of being foreign wears off fast. Eventually you’re just a guy trying to live your life somewhere.

But something about Brazil is different.

It’s the way people look you in the eye when they talk to you. The way a random conversation at a coffee shop turns into a real connection. The way strangers go out of their way to help you instead of brushing you off.

Service feels human here. Not transactional like in the States.

There’s a warmth that’s hard to explain until you experience it. It’s not perfect. No country is. But it feels alive.

After bouncing around the world for years, this is the first place in a long time where I don’t feel like I’m “trying it out.”

I just feel at home.

And that’s something I didn’t realize I was looking for.

A Brazilian scientist worked in silence for 25 years on something medicine said was impossible: regenerating the spinal cord.

Dr. Tatiana Sampaio extracted a protein from placentas that acts as "biological glue" — recreating the conditions that let embryonic neurons connect.

Six patients with complete spinal cord injuries regained movement.

This isn't my field. But the principle is everything I believe about medicine. The body was designed to regenerate. Give it the right environment and it will.

There is no approved treatment on earth that restores motor function after a complete spinal cord injury. A team led by Dr. Tatiana Coelho de Sampaio at @UFRJ in Brazil may be changing that.

They spent 25+ years developing polylaminin, a stabilized polymer of laminin. Laminin is a protein your body uses to build neural connections during embryonic development. After birth, it becomes scarce. They figured out how to recreate it in the lab.

One injection directly into the injured spinal cord. It acts as a biological scaffold. Axons regrow across the injury. Glial scarring is reduced. Neurons reconnect.

Their pilot study included 8 patients with complete spinal cord injuries. Two died from the severity of their trauma. The 6 who survived? All of them regained voluntary motor control. Normally only about 15% of these patients recover any motor function on their own.

In 2025 they tested it on chronically paralyzed dogs. Dogs that hadn't recovered after months of physiotherapy showed significant gait improvement.

ANVISA approved Phase 1 human trials on January 5, 2026. But patients couldn't wait. Brazilian courts have been ordering compassionate use access because the regulatory timeline can't match the biological urgency.

250,000 to 500,000 people suffer spinal cord injuries every year worldwide. For most of them, nothing exists that restores what they lost.

The body knows how to heal. Sometimes it just needs the right scaffold. Now watch how long the system takes to let everyone else have it.
