I worked with a maternal mental health clinic where the patient population was perinatal+post-partum requiring high-level specialist care due to uncontrolled or severe mental illness diagnoses. They started screening on intake for ADHD and 1/3 of patients met the criteria

They started treatment for ADHD and many had significant improvement from previous “uncontrolled mental illness”. They just had the wrong diagnosis. This speaks the ongoing harm of missed diagnosis and minimization of the impact that ADHD has on people’s ability to function

Some of these patients had other doctors tell them that they were very sick, would likely never get better, continue to face ongoing in-patient psychiatric hospitalizations and severe episodes. All because of a missed diagnosis.

Never forget what a psychiatrist friend of mine said to me, “Stimulant medications for ADHD are the most successful treatment for a disorder across the entire medical field. There is pretty much no other treatment for any disorder that performs as well is this.”
