Stop talking trash about different Midwest states:
Minnesota is ICONIC
Wisconsin is BEAUTIFUL
Illinois is MAGNIFICENT
Michigan is GREAT
Ohio
Iowa is CUTTING EDGE
In Biog1500 Investigative Lab, I learned so many useful skills that will serve me well in my future scientific endeavors. The lesson that stands out to me most was the process of statistical analysis using R and R Studio software! #biog1500#CUintheLab
I never understood the complexity in which people’s lives can be affected by environmental factors until now. Here is what the WHO reports that the Philippines is doing to protect its people:
Climate change affects human health in the Philippines in so many ways. The different aspects of cc include flooding/drought, heat waves, and air pollution. How these intersect with health concerns: [1/3]
#CUinTheLab @ResearchIsNuts
Flooding/drought displaces populations near coastal and agricultural regions. Increased temperature and humidity lead to more cases of malaria and dengue fever. Air pollution leads to infection, lung cancer, and COPD. [2/3] #climatechange
However, our data (using disc diffusion) showed that Amp. inhibited the growth of Serratia better than Strep., because its average zone of inhibition was greater. Future experiments should be conducted accounting for possible confounding variables/environment, etc. [3/3].
We conducted an experiment comparing the relative efficacies of the antibiotics Streptomycin and Ampicillin against gram-negative bacteria, Serratia Marcescens. This poster presents our findings. [1/3] #biog1500#CUinthelab @researchisnuts

We cited results from past experiments, which showed that Streptomycin should inhibit the growth of S. marcescens better than Ampicillin. One experiment in particular can be found at https://t.co/pdgsN5xpdu [2/3]
The results suggested that Phosphorus is the limiting nutrient in the subtropical forests of China, not Nitrogen, because the high ratio of N to P found in the forest floors, leaves, and fine roots.
Nutrient Limitation on Ecosystem Productivity and Processes of Mature and Old-Growth Subtropical Forests in China. #limitingnutrients#CUintheLab This study aimed to define the limiting nutrients in the subtropical forests of China, which are surrounded by industrial zones. [1/3]
At 8 different study sites, leaves, soil samples, fine roots, and forest floor materials were gathered, and respective tests were conducted to determine N, P, and C concentrations using their masses before and after oven-drying. #biomass @researchisnuts
They founds the genes SAOUHSC_01415, SAOUHSC_03002, and SAOUHSC_01327 to have the highest ranks. These isolates are resistant to Novobiocin (the antibiotic used in this test) because they do not have gryB mutation. (Novobiocin inhibits gryB subunit to kill bacteria.) [3/3] #bio
Network Analysis of Antibiotic Resistance Identifies Compelling Mutations across Pathways. #CUintheLab Study aims to learn more about the ways that Staphylococcus aureus (cause of osteomyelitis, endocarditis, etc) mutates at genetic level to become antibiotic resistant. [1/3]
Using data from a gene IDs with one mutation, they made a graphical representation of the Protein-Protein Interactions network. These networks are used in nCop (Network-Based Coverage of Mutational Profiles) to rank prevalence of a mutated gene. [2/3] @researchisnuts
[3/3] They found that both the scent and appearance contribute to the flies’ attraction, but scent contributes more than appearance when the variables are isolated. #materialscience#chemistry#animalbehavior#plantadaptation

[1/3] Disentangling visual and olfactory signals in mushroom mimicking Dracula orchids using realistic three dimensional printed flowers. @Tobiaspolicha@NewPhyt Study analyzes which aspects of the Dracula orchid attract flies in order to be pollinated. #floralmimicry#CUintheLab
[2/3]Scientists created different models of the orchid, isolating its appearance & smell using 3D printed models of the flower’s anatomy and chemical volatiles to imitate the flower’s scent. They analyzed how mushroom-associating flies interacted with each of the models.
