#WorldCup resale chaos proved the point — California needs to pass AB 1349 and AB 1720 to shut down speculative listings and cap ticket gouging. Both bills cleared the Assembly. Time for the Senate to finish it.
When wildfires hit Los Angeles this past January, Californians did what they always do in a crisis — they turned on local news. Viewership doubled and tripled. The problem is the newsrooms that delivered that coverage are quietly disappearing.
I wrote about this for @Calbizj and the core issue is straightforward: the advertising economy that once funded local journalism has fundamentally shifted. Five tech companies now account for roughly two-thirds of all digital ad spending. That has hollowed out the business model behind the reporters covering city councils in Fresno, school boards in San Diego, and neighborhoods across the state.
The Nexstar-TEGNA merger currently being challenged by California AG Rob Bonta is directly relevant to this. Whatever one thinks of media consolidation in the abstract, blocking this deal in court doesn't restore a single newsroom or protect a single job. Ohio AG Dave Yost took a different approach — he negotiated binding commitments on staffing and local programming. That's the model worth following.
Local broadcast news isn't a relic. It's infrastructure. And preserving it will require policymakers to engage with the actual economics of today's media market.

San Diego’s innovation economy runs on connected digital tools like cloud services, marketplaces, and payment systems. SB 1074 could disrupt those links and challenge startups and researchers. We urge @drakilahweber to consider its impact on local growth and entrepreneurship.
