An 11-year-old boy in Canada died from rabies after waking up with a bat on his face while staying at a cottage in 2024.

Because there were no visible bite marks, his family did not seek medical care. Weeks later, he developed symptoms and was diagnosed with rabies, but he died after the disease had already progressed. Doctors say any direct contact with a bat should be treated as a rabies risk, since the virus is almost always fatal once symptoms appear.
