In spite of what the loudest voices online say, the greatest problem the church (you) faces is your sin. The conflict is not primarily caused by them but it’s internal (me). The answer isn’t defeating others. Thankfully God’s grace is greater than our sin. James 4:1-6
@megbasham If it is revealed that I sexually abused my children while publicly arguing against your efforts to prevent sexual abuse reform in the SBC, you would use that fact to discredit my arguments. You won't do that in this case because that would discredit your arguments.
@megbasham Your argument is flawed, though plausible. It suggests that beliefs led to the behavior. But it is more than plausible that the unrighteous defense of abusers leads to further abuse. This guy was your fellow laborer against SBC abuse reforms. Says a lot about those efforts
@megbasham If Meg's assertion is true, that Lyell's emails reveal that Sills' behavior was entirely consensual and not abusive, much we label as sexual abuse goes away. Parents can't abuse children and sexual partners can never be labeled abusers b/c of affection expressed by victims.
Astoundingly, in an almost 200-word response ironically accusing @RobertDownen_ of journalistic malpractice, @megbasham completely avoids using the words Pressler or Patterson.
I’m just going to say it, the fact that Robert Downen once again flogs Jennifer Lyell’s claims of harm from the SBC but does not mention that later uncovered emails from her to Sills revealed that the relationship was consensual is downright journalistic malpractice.
That he does not even mention these emails is journalistic malpractice. That he does not mention anything about how egregiously Guidepost conducted their supposed investigation (naming men abusers without even trying to corroborate the allegations of abuse) is journalistic malpractice. He does not even mention the specific controversy over Guidepost’s mishandling, pretending that it was just about the firm being LGBTQ supporters. (which was a problem, but guidepost problems go much much deeper than that).
Downen also sent me a list of questions which I answered in detail and he used none of that. That’s his discretion, but I think it’s telling.
To be honest, there is nothing even somewhat new here. There was plenty new to report, but Downen chose to ignore what was new for this repackaging of old reporting.
@megbasham The Lyell emails do not absolve Sills of abuse. You need them too because you think that would absolve you of your sinful treatment of Lyell. But Lyell's email's expressing affection for Sills in no way proves he didn't abuse her.
@virgilwalker Real solution:
Correct the false teaching that marriage is the fix, cure all for lust and sexual sin? Young men who engage in the sin of lust become husbands who lust and their marriages suffer as a result.
@catturd2 Kitchen table issue. As Americans are looking at their budgets for this month, all of us are frozen with anticipation of how Trump will deal with Van Jones lack of loyalty.
@mboyle1 There was some big news and an endorsement in the KY GOP Senate race on Friday. You've written a lot about the GOP candidates in that race. Did you not see the endorsement?
@megbasham@coolbohemian There are numerous broken marriages due to the inaccurate teaching that marriage is the cure to "properly channel" lust. As a man who has sinned in the area of lust and pornography, it doesn't need to be channeled. By God's grace, it needs to die.
@jrwhitehead@lukeholmes It's unrealistic at this stage to ask folks to "take a step back from "trial" when you introduced this using words such as "tribunal" and "arbitration."
