as far as masculine “initiation” rituals go, the tough thing is that you cannot initiate yourself

e.g. a 30 day cold shower challenge is gesturing at such a ritual, but it falls short because it’s maintained by conscious intention

whereas a true initiation is when you are thrown well beyond your intentions - where you are forced to submit to something larger than you, persist via sheer will, and thus encounter the impenetrable confidence within (which you could call the Self)

a meditation retreat can’t do this. a carefully curated trip to Europe can’t do this

you can consciously choose to sail into a storm, but the storm must take you - it must be inescapable - in order to actually cross the threshold

Grizzlies are on the march, onto the prairie where people live. This range expansion into the prairie and front range, is outside of their designated recovery zone under the Endangered Species Act. Otherwise solitary grizzlies moving in groups like this are pretty rare, this is likely what they call a family group, or a couple of mothers with cubs/subadults. The bears expanding beyond the recovery zone are moving fast, 12% increases in range in just 2 years. When they do nonlethal hazing, Montana FWP they use cracker shotgun shells (12 gauge with a loud sound and flash) fired above or close to the bear. They also use paint balls, air horns, spotlights, hoses, maybe dogs. It’s time to delist these bears, turn their management over to the state wildlife agencies, and allow a scientifically informed hunting season. If the intention was to never delist these animals, then honest conversations need to begin to happen with people about what it means to share the landscape with a massive predator. The current model where coastal city NGOs sue for 20 years to prevent federal endangered species law from functioning is dishonest and batshit crazy.
