While horses evolved a flight mentality, donkeys evolved a freeze-or-fight mentality.

Horses evolved in open grasslands, where there was enough space to flee when threatened by a predator.

Ancestral donkeys, however, evolved in rugged, arid terrain, where running fast over long distances often meant injury.

Horses also live in large herds in the wild; when one runs, the whole herd follows. Donkeys, by contrast, live in small groups or alone.

So when startled, a donkey first freezes for a moment, assessing whether escape is even possible. If it isn't, the donkey fights back.

A donkey's kick is remarkably precise, unlike a horse's.

They can also deliver a sharp bite with blunt teeth, even grabbing a small attacker & slamming it against rocks.

This is what we might call the donkey's philosophy: freeze, assess, fight.
