My question is - once again - why did the Coalition SUPPORT endless increases in excise (including on alcohol) apparently knowing it would lead to a black market?

As much as I despise Labor - they are just the latest in a long line of governments to watch the excise revenue tick over without the slightest concern for the consequences.

The only reason - the ONLY reason - Angus Taylor and the Liberals are taking on this problem is because One Nation raised it FIRST.

One Nation took the political risk. They led the investigations. They went out first and the Liberals, only when they thought it'd be electorally safe, followed.

And this is the problem. Without One Nation, the Coalition wouldn't be doing any of this stuff.

This is political bush-bashing with the orange stick clearing a path through the wilderness.

Meanwhile, Bloomberg just revealed that a massive property developer in Sydney which collapsed this week under billions in debt actually somehow operated an under-the-radar student visa, migration and education business out of its headquarters

The entire Australian economy is a joke at this point, just a rotting carcass of property, student visa and NDIS scams stacked on top of each other while people like Senator Charlotte Walker ($230,000 salary) run the government.

If you compare the quality of people who go into government in Singapore compared to Australia, it is actually enough to start crying. If you were to teach an AI agent how the Australian economy and government worked it would seek out embodied form purely so that it could then kill itself with a shotgun.

Bowen should be asking - "what is this wonderful Australia technology that puts a nuclear reactor into the back of a truck and can be built in a few weeks?"

Albanese should be asking - "Why can't we be using this to overcome high electricity costs and regional needs?"

Thanks for mentioning me and my public school teacher wife’s contribution to affordable housing Paul. We could get 600 bucks a week for them after Albo’s diabolical deceitful budget but we haven’t raised rents. All 2BR apartments with car parking inner city Melb. We rent one to a single mum and her 2 kids for $120 a week, they have been in it for 8 years at that price, one to a single dad and his daughter for $150 a week, that’s been five years, the other six for between $350 & $400. Our real estate agent rings us constantly and checks if we wanna raise rents. We say no. You reckon Albo or any of his MP mates with their huge property portfolios have rented that cheap? A news organisation has verified my numbers btw.

DON’T LET CHALMERS HIDE BEHIND AN AVERAGE

Jim Chalmers likes to boast that Labor has delivered the lowest average unemployment rate in 50 years—3.9%.

But averages can hide where you are now.

In July 2026, unemployment was 4.5%, with 691,500 Australians unemployed, plus another 6.4% underemployed. The employment-to-population ratio fell to 63.9%.

And Roy Morgan's broader measure puts unemployment at 11.6%, with 20.4% of the workforce either unemployed or underemployed. Different methodology, yes—but worth asking why the headline measures differ so dramatically.

Then look beyond jobs.

June-quarter GDP grew 0.4%, but GDP per capita was effectively flat and remains below its June 2022 level. Productivity was flat in the quarter and down 0.2% over the year.

Population growth can make total GDP look respectable.

What matters to Australians is GDP per Australian.

Chalmers can celebrate the average.

Australians should judge the current reality: jobs, hours, productivity and living standards per person.

Don't let political averages hide economic reality.

Thankyou for this mate. John went to the next election saying ‘ I’ve changed my position, if you vote for me this time you will get a GST’, and I didn’t vote for him, because as a young comedian, I didn’t want to be a tax collector. I told everyone I knew to not vote Coalition, but enough did, and he won again. So I accepted it, because he had a mandate. That’s democracy. What Albo & Co pulled wasn’t, and that’s why they will get deservedly demolished at next election. Their lies have lost them the trust of the electorate.

He's meeting with Anthropic and OpenAI, working on Australia’s data centre pipeline.

I'm here as the co-founder of @_Firmable and a Partner at @GlitchCapital, meeting with Australian founders who moved here this year. The CGT changes came up in almost every conversation as part of the reason they left Australia to build their business in the US.

What a mess.

The AFR published two opinion pieces todaythat demonstrate this shambles.

In the first, Treasurer Jim Chalmers set out how Australia can benefit from AI if we get it right. And that’s a big if. The headline number he was spruiking was $150 billion of data centre investment by 2030.

Jim, data centres are the bottom of the stack. Concrete, power and imported GPUs. Enormous capex, very few jobs, and negligible compounding growth for our country. If that's only our AI strategy, we’re in trouble, as we're importing expensive chips, hosting someone else's product, and then buying the intelligence built on top of it at full retail.

The bigger opportunity is in using and complementing the frontier models. Products built on top of frontier models that solve real business problems. That's where jobs are created and where the productivity Chalmers is chasing actually comes from. I’m seeing it at what we’re building at Firmable, the companies we invest in at Glitch and the founders I’m meeting in the Bay Area.

In the second op-ed, @Shaun_Cartoon laid out what Chalmers is actually doing to the people who build that layer. Effective rates for founder and employee equity are doubling to 47%, which is why founders are leaving.

Australia is courting the frontier labs on one hand, and taxing the hell out of the Australian founders and builders.

You can't be a value-add exporter of AI when the value-adders are in San Francisco.

If Australia is serious about backing innovation, restore the 50% CGT discount for all businesses. This alone will generate far greater productivity gains for our country than data centres will.

Correct me if I am wrong but Secret Harbour was a state by-election in the context of a long term Labor government. In the first instance the implications are harshest for the state Liberals and certainly state Labor.
