This is what learning looks like at Alpha School South Bay LA. My 7th grade daughter started off with a 3rd grade reading test to start off school. Passed (90%+). Then passed 4th.
But she must have had a gap at 5th grade (tested at 80%). So she spent 6 days catching up and filling gaps, and then passed 5th. Passed 6th the next day.
Now she’s working on 7th grade reading. It wouldn’t surprise me if she gets up to 8th or 9th in reading this year.
That said, she’s still way behind in the other subjects. Our supposedly blue ribbon public schools failed us.
Opening and progress this year:
Math: 4th
Fast Math: 3rd / TBD - she has passed every level so far
Reading: 5th -> 7th
Language: 4th -> 5th
Vocabulary: 4th -> 6th
Science: 3rd -> 4th
@3dancingfeet do you somehow not understand that I'm criticizing you with my tweet? I'm not agreeing with you. You are the one I'm referring to who is declaring you won't listen to the data (did you even read the chart in context?) But thanks for the like and retweet I guess? 😂
@mandylu Hilarious given you don’t understand the changes that have occurred in how this law is enforced or how it was enforced to begin with. This was never “borderline illegal” for tech companies and it’s not even remotely illegal now for anybody.

Not only is this not “borderline illegal”, the constitutionality of the ridiculous “disparate impact” standard people have used to argue this was challenged by the DOJ earlier this year and IQ tests are now presumptively job-related and the EEOC has stopped enforcing “disparate impact”
In short, there is nothing factual about this tweet and she is bereft of any understanding or facts on the topic.

I try to ride my bicycle hands-free as much as possible, it makes riding a bike on uneven terrain a fun challenge and increases balance and proprioception. Highly recommend. Start on paved trails. Graduate to unpaved trails, grabbing the bars when it gets too sketchy. Eventually you can do this anywhere short of actual mtb trails. I ride a gravel bike.
In general I treat cycling like a multi-modal workout, heart rate >150, with fun balance challenges. I don’t get the spandex Tour de France larping approach… I’m a circus beast on a bike.
Your ability to balance comes from the inner ear (Vestibular system)
There is a system of canal and organ structures that align with gravity, sense propulsion, motion, rotation
These coordinate with your eyes and muscles and brain
This system always functions, but as you age and move less, your brain becomes less organized with the information
People lose balance easier, slip, fall. This is preventable, but you need to do movement that requires balancing in the first place
This is possibly why tennis seems to improve longevity
It's constant lateral motion, multi directional movement
Keeps the brain young and stimulates neuroplasticity
We had a model of instructional design that demonstrably worked for teaching early reading/Math since the late 60s. Then education academics spent the next 50 years demonising it and training new teachers to do the exact opposite - skills-based/choose your own adventure curriculum design, minimally guided instruction, contempt for standardised testing etc and now we are where we are.
@sjemsjem42069@QuoteJung God is not the same as religion.
In the physical copy of the album the art is multilayered transparent acetate overlays. This is the layer I’m talking about.
I excelled at math and managed to figure a lot out on my own, just one of my gifts I suppose. I gorged myself on multiplication memorization and would not just finish first on all our times tables tests, but would race myself to keep improving my time. I guess I was abusing myself the whole time! I abused myself to jump two grades in math and then go on to get a math degree… lock me up!! 😅

An early "Toto, I have a feeling we're not in Kansas anymore" moment in my teacher training was being told by a staff developer that "making children memorize times tables is child abuse!"
