We’re aware of Danielle Smith’s plan to release a parental rights policy this week.
I want to be clear: The Alberta NDP will do everything we can to ensure these targeted children are protected.
The timing of this announcement, days after Alberta learned of Caidence’s heartbreaking story, seems particularly cruel. While the news was reporting that 12-year-old Caidence had nearly lost her chance for a life-saving kidney transplant because of staffing shortages at the Stollery, Smith was sharing a stage and smiling in photo ops with Tucker Carlson after he spouted racist, homophobic rhetoric in Calgary.
Rather than throwing their efforts, their time, and their resources towards solving the dangerous situation Alberta children are facing in our health care system, it appears the UCP is trying to gain points with their base by engaging in dog whistle politics.
Yesterday, Smith said, we should “think about the kids who are listening to us as adults talking about these issues that are impacting them.”
The kids *are* listening, Danielle. You’re being loud and clear.
DANIELLE SMITH AMPLIFIES HARMFUL, DISCRIMINATORY RHETORIC
CALGARY — Earlier today, Alberta NDP Leader Rachel Notley denounced Premier Danielle Smith and urged her to disavow the harmful rhetoric spread by highly discriminatory, far-right conspiracy theorist Tucker Carlson.
Yesterday, Smith joined Carlson for multiple events, including a panel with Brett Wilson and Jordan Peterson, where the discussion included vaccine misinformation and discriminatory comments about several equity-seeking groups.
“The Premier's actions, unfortunately, have sent a disheartening message about our province to the rest of the world,” said Notley. “At a time when many people - including investors, job creators, and many professionals so desperately needed in our workforce - are considering Alberta as their new home, Danielle Smith sat across from a man moments after he promoted white supremacy and disparaged immigrants.”
“Knowing what Tucker Carlson stands for, thousands of Albertans signed a petition asking Danielle Smith to decline this man any opportunity to spread his misogynistic, xenophobic, and homophobic attacks in the place they call home, but she sat down with him anyway.”
Shortly after the Tucker Carlson appearance was announced, thousands of Albertans signed a petition, asking Danielle Smith not to allow Carlson to have such a platform in Alberta.
“Our province’s strength comes from the diversity of our neighbours, and we are better as a province because of our ability to embrace and welcome anyone who chooses to call Alberta home,” said Notley.
“This is the Alberta that we expect the Premier to showcase when the world is watching.
“I call on Danielle Smith to reflect deeply on her choice to use the Office of the Premier to elevate someone like Tucker Carlson, and I urge her to specifically disavow his harmful and dangerous views.
“Most importantly, she must apologize to the Albertans who feel less secure and less welcome today because of her actions.
“The Alberta NDP strongly condemns everything Tucker Carlson stands for, and we stand strong against such division and hate. We will never stop fighting for what's just and continue working tirelessly towards a future where every Albertan lives the genuine experience of their inherent value.”
.@ABDanielleSmith Brilliant!!!
How better to build a complex life saving multi-billion-dollar healthcare system than to fill town halls with multitudes and design it by populist brainstorming.
That’s how airplanes should be flown. Passengers should call the shots.
