I’m a photographer in Baton Rouge, deeply connected to my community. In conjunction with my work, I founded The Pelican Project, which supports child protection programming with a special focus on young people in Louisiana.

The child recovery effort following the chaotic evacuations and frantic rooftop rescues for #HurricaneKatrina and Rita was the most significant in US history—all but 12 of the 5,192 children displaced/separated from family were found alive. #katrina20

@Momto2_Cats@Chris_R_Welty@FOX8NOLA Yes. Every child is unique, but missing children with severe autism often wander/elope and seek out bodies of water. It’s not fully understood why. Children with autism are 160 times as likely to drown as the general pediatric population.
@DeonGuillory@WAFB Transparency is essential to community trust but trying to capitalize on what may be community members’ worst days is poor leadership. @OnPatrolLive’s viewership revels in mocking those unfortunate enough to have their lives exposed on nat’l TV. Is this what we want from @BRPD?
Pearson warns the outcome of a case ultimately falls on the person who took the children … while it can be hard to deal with a tragic outcome, Pearson says it is only natural to look for somewhere to place blame. She says sometimes that can fall on systems like #AMBERAlert.
“(T)he two most relevant factors in recovering children are the abductor’s relationship to the children and the abductor’s decision making. A perfect law enforcement investigation can sometimes not overcome the abductor’s decision to harm a child.” #amberalert#tangipahoa
Update: Second arrest made today in Jackson, MS in connection to double murders, kidnapping and human trafficking case that started in Tangipahoa Parish and ended in Mississippi

@ballsstrikes The decision reversed in part, vacated in part, and remanded. The Court said the 2021 law could not be retroactively applied “despite the sickening and despicable factual allegations.” The case now rests on the doctrine of contra non valentem, which could be a stronger argument.
@SalHernandez@tarantulaarms Aggressive law enforcement approaches to child abduction emergencies can exacerbate volatile situations and place children in MORE danger. In stranger abductions time is the enemy. For family abductions time may be the child’s friend.

Newly released footage and audio recordings from a vehicle pursuit in September 2022 show that a 15-year-old girl who had been kidnapped by her father was fatally shot by deputies' gunfire as she followed their instructions to exit her father’s truck. https://t.co/jYVrxOL8rY

I’m happy to share The Pelican Project is now “soaring,” supporting national child protection programming with a particular focus on missing, abducted, exploited, homeless, and emergency-fostered children and young people in Louisiana.
