Some character designs take a lot of process and experimentation. And sometimes you basically nail the design on your first go. There's no hard rules on how VisDev is supposed to go, and going with your first idea is not always a "red flag".

And also definitely repurpose that pilot as a canon episode if you can! It doesnt really matter if your pilot feels a bit rougher compared to the rest of the series. That's normal (see: Cartoon pilots i posted above)

Been seeing a lot of talk about Pilots vs. First episodes and that they aren't the same thing. While that's technically true, plenty of shows will repurpose their pilot as their first episode or even as a later episode.

I do think creators should consider at least making smaller pilots more focused on selling the idea and core characters and less overstuffed with major plot and lore beats that can be saved for later. Coming from someone who may have made similar mistakes in one of my own pilots.
