We are deeply saddened by the passing of Hall of Famer Ryne Sandberg.
The beloved Cubs second baseman was a five-tool model of consistency in the 1980s and early ’90s, making 10 consecutive All-Star teams and winning 9 straight Gold Glove awards.
On June 23, 1984, a national TV audience watched Sandberg hit a pair of game-tying home runs in the 9th and 10th innings off Cardinals closer and future Hall of Famer Bruce Sutter. Part of a magical Cubs Postseason run, the game is forever remembered in Chicago as “The Sandberg Game.” He went on to win the 1984 NL MVP Award.
Over 16 seasons, Sandberg slugged 282 home runs, 277 of which were as a second baseman, then a Major League record. He hit 25+ homers five times and stole 30+ bases five times.
Sandberg made his Major League debut with the Phillies in 1981 and later managed them for parts of three seasons.
On June 23, 2024, the 40th anniversary of his iconic moment, the Cubs unveiled a statue of Sandberg outside Wrigley Field.
Sandberg bravely battled cancer the last two years. He was 65.
🚨#BREAKING: A Delta Airlines CRJ-900 jet operated by Endeavor Air has crashed and overturned with numerous passengers on board
📌#Toronto | #Canada
Currently, numerous emergency crews are on the scene at Toronto Pearson Airport after a Delta Air Lines flight from Minneapolis-Saint Paul to Toronto, operated by Endeavor Air, crashed and landed upside down. The flight, Endeavor 4819, a CRJ-900 (N932XJ), reportedly had many passengers safely evacuate, though the exact number of injuries remains unknown. Authorities are assessing the situation, and emergency responders are working to secure the aircraft and assist those affected.
Tuesday begins with #Milton having completed it's eyewall replacement cycle. The new eye is clearing out and the wind field has expanded. An expanding wind field, the angle of approach to the coast, and the formidable strength, all will lead to a deep & damaging surge in #Florida
The eye wall of #Helene is moving onshore now.
TAKE COVER NOW! Treat these imminent, extreme winds as if a tornado was approaching and move immediately to the safe room in your shelter. Take action now to protect your life!
Here comes category 4 Hurricane Helene for night into Steinhatchee, Florida with 160 mph wind gusts and a 20 foot storm surge. WATCH LIVE: https://t.co/8vXnurfDgM
LIVE NOW: Watch as cameras from outside the @Space_Station capture views of Hurricane #Helene as it approaches the Gulf Coast of Florida. https://t.co/v0vcB1YJwB
Update 6:20 PM EDT Thurs: Helene now an extremely dangerous Category 4 hurricane
A NOAA Hurricane Hunter aircraft currently investigating Helene recently found that the maximum sustained winds have increased to 130 mph (215 km/h). The minimum central pressure has also decreased to 947 mb (27.96 inches) based on dropsonde data.
For reference, this is what a 19 foot storm surge looked like when I chased Hurricane Michael. This was Mexico Beach, FL.
You can see why the word “unsurvivable” is being used to describe the potential surge from #Helene.
As #Helene continues to approach the coast, please do not get overly focused on short-term wobbles in its track, "false" eye locations, or on specific computer model simulations.
EVERYONE along the Florida Big Bend coast is at risk of potentially catastrophic storm surge and damaging hurricane-force winds later this evening, and life-threatening storm surge is already increasing along the west coast of Florida.
