What I think stands out to me about this story is he was the one who reached out, not the other way around. He heard through the grapevine that a trans fan was feeling this way, and was willing to move a mountain to do something about it.
@prerecessiongrl@teartoxin this is all so well-expressed, thank you for posting it. I truly feel like so many male writers are holding themselves back. it's a sign of the writer's incompetence: lack of vision, lack of research, lack of depth. junot diaz has a great quote on this
"Yes there's a problem but it's easier to ask feminists to shut up than it is to ask men to change" seems to be a sentiment that transcends age and political divide
Mayor Mamdani, pressed on what he would say to King Charles if they talk later:
“If I was to speak to the king… I would probably encourage him to return the Kohinoor diamond,” Mamdani says, referring to the gem in the British Crown Jewels, which taken from India.
@shahanSean@Sturgeons_Law apologies, my twitter went down for a sec! I didn't even think that previous tweet had posted. I wanted to add that I would really, really appreciate some literature recommendations if you have the time! I'm very interested in this topic. :)
@shahanSean@Sturgeons_Law I know. you were critiquing how & why academics use the term. or "settler colonialism," if you want to be more specific. I was referring to your brief explanation of marxism shaping understandings of economic systems in your field that could be termed "colonialism" in your view.
@shahanSean@Sturgeons_Law but if that's not an issue for you, it's fine. we all prioritize differently, I suppose. I really just started asking because I was curious about where your definition of colonialism was coming from and who exactly it was in opposition to. you've clarified. thank you.
@shahanSean@Sturgeons_Law Hypotheticals don't really interest me. I personally wouldn't want others to use my words & credentials for something I did not intend, especially when it's from something as preventable as avoiding sweeping generalizations and hyperbole in a pithy tweet. /1
@shahanSean@Sturgeons_Law ... but this is a public-facing app: the public has very specific associations with settler colonialism -- i.e., not with your period but the post-15th-century kind -- and as an accredited historian, your credentials put all the more power behind your words.
@shahanSean@Sturgeons_Law my concern lies mostly with how others will receive this tweet, not me. I think you need only look to your replies to see how easily a tweet like this can be weaponized. you're a great scholar (I actually recommended Muhammad & the Empires of Faith to a prof last semester) ... /1
@shahanSean@Sturgeons_Law your original tweet is very general in its language. you say academic historians in general, which includes this period. I think the implication that all of these scholars are using a term they fundamentally don't understand or misuse on purpose to belittle others is not great.
@shahanSean@Sturgeons_Law I appreciate your reply. what I'm saying is there are many historians who study colonialism in the 15th-19th centuries who aren't marxist. considering the terms "colonialism" and "settler colonialism" originate in that field, I was wondering if you'd considered their definitions.
@shahanSean@Sturgeons_Law oh. would you mind explaining how? I was going off of your other tweets where you connect colonialism as being chiefly defined through a marxist lens, and connecting them to these ones where you say settler colonialism is "a cudgel of opprobrium used by academic historians."
@shahanSean@Sturgeons_Law I mean, "colonial" is a whole field of history; it designates a time period starting with the colonization of Americas. have you looked at the definitions used by scholars who work in that period? dismissing a whole field as marxists with malintent seems short-sighted.
@MatthewTanous@andyneiman you neglect to consider that writers are not amorphous blobs floating above the earth. they are people whose understandings and interests have been shaped by their experiences. if you do not write your opinions/views with intention you will be still be writing them accidentally.
@ContraPoints @Malorleigh @extweetenator Natalie you literally deleted all your tweet replies after losing an argument with Big Joel last week. I don't know if debating is for you
Absurd and inhuman violence is spreading ferociously through the sacred places of the Christian East, profaned by the blasphemy of war and the brutality of business, with no regard for people’s lives, which are considered at most collateral damage of self-interest. But no gain can be worth the life of the weakest, children, or families. No cause can justify the shedding of innocent blood.
