It is radicalizing to look back at history and realize how right the reactionaries were
Take, for example, this passage in Victorious Century by David Cannadine on the Marquess of Salisbury being entirely in his gloomy predictions, all of which Liberals insisted would never come to pass:
"In 1883, when the Conservatives' electoral prospects still seemed gloomy, Lord Salisbury gave vent to these anxieties in an essay published in the Quarterly Review, apocalyptically headed 'Disintegration'.
"As his title suggested, he feared the British nation and empire were facing a potentially catastrophic crisis, because many of the people who had been given the vote in 1867 were, he believed, ignorant, envious, antagonistic and unpatriotic (as Robert Lowe had argued at the time).
"And in response to this recently (and wrongly) widened franchise, the Liberal Party of Gladstone (and now of Chamberlain) had embraced ever more radical politics, and thus represented an unprecedented challenge to the established order, not only at home but also overseas.
"Urged on by their leaders who ought to have known better, Salisbury feared that antagonistic social groups were mobilizing against each other for class war, that the traditional, propertied hierarchy was in jeopardy, and that the possessions of 'churchmen, landowners, publicans, manufacturers, house-owners, railway shareholders [and] fund-holders' were all at risk. Moreover, he went on, such partisan animosities not only portended domestic collapse: they would also erode the will to rule, both in the United Kingdom and overseas. Ireland, he feared, was 'the worst symptom of our malady', for to dissolve and abandon the Union would not only be intrinsically disastrous, but would also mean that 'all claims to protect or govern anyone beyond our own narrow island were at an end'. The repudiation of great-power obligations overseas, and the weakening of the will to rule, Salisbury pessimistically concluded, would invariably follow, and with it the 'loss of large branches and limbs of our Empire'.
"During the early 1880s Salisbury's sombre analysis concerning the bleak electoral prospects for the Tories, and his fear that the United Kingdom and the British Empire might break up, were widely shared by many Conservative peers, MPs and voters; and also by Queen Victoria, who dreaded that if the Liberals had their way, with Gladstone back in power and 'un-muzzled', she might be reduced to the impotent and degraded status of a mere 'democratical monarch'. These were the gloomiest prognostications by any Tory leader since the Duke of Wellington had predicted in the early 1830s that parliamentary reform would spell the end of civilization as he knew it."
With the rise of Absolutism the estates were expelled from political decision making. As a result, the sovereign assumed total responsibility which required an ever-increased rationalised form of politics. This created a dualism between politics and morality.

@WDOUXahAt6FeceS@V69O6iL62aMiJjU Not exactly true on the last bit.
The French Guards included included the aristocratic Gardes du Corps and Mousquetaires de la Garde. Nobles also formed the chevaliers du poignard to protect the royal family
The Chasseurs Nobles and Cavalerie Nobles de Condé also existed
@irkedlizard@TheNameofWar There were soviet sponsored red mongols but ungern was not toppled in a popular uprising, he lost to the reds and was left tied up by his own men for the bolsheviks to capture.
