Frailty in nursing home residents with advanced dementia is linked to a nearly 4x higher risk of dysphagia (difficulty swallowing) before hospitalization and a 1.7 times increased risk of developing new dysphagia post-hospitalization. 🏥
Watch your Loved One's swollowing, especially if they are frail.

This post basically says that super tiny plastic pieces called “microplastics” get into your brain and organs and cause damage.
This is especially problematic for your children because plastics disrupt sexual development hormone systems—resulting in feminization of brains.
🔍 Seizures & Alzheimer's: What You Need to Know
Repost this important information!
A 2021 meta-analysis reveals that seizures occur in up to 16% of people with Alzheimer’s, with rates rising to nearly 50% in cases linked to genetic mutations (APP, PSEN1, PSEN2). Seizures can occur before or after cognitive decline, underscoring the importance of early detection and monitoring. Separate research shows that seizure medication may improve cognitive functioning if seizures are occurring in cases of dementia.
👉 Most common seizure type: Focal to bilateral tonic-clonic
👉 Monitor: Watch your loved ones with dementia or MCI for potential signs of seizures.
👉 Take action: If you're concerned, ask your physician about an EEG test to identify and manage seizures early.

#Caregiving is a master class in humility. We learn that we cannot fix every problem, can't meet every need. So much is beyond our control and more things change than remain reliable. What we can give relentlessly, deeply and tenderly is our #love.

@DementiaLeague I wish I could have found a younger picture this morning. This is my mom, Momma “Nene”.
A teacher, school counselor, and a great mother.
Today, let’s honor them.
Share a photo of your loved one with dementia as they were—young, healthy, vibrant. Grab one from a frame or photobook and drop it in the replies so we remember them the way they wanted to be remembered. 💜 Let’s see how many lives we can celebrate together.

A personal note:
When my mom, “Nene,” was diagnosed with dementia, she asked through tears, “Why me?” I didn’t have an answerso I founded The Dementia League.
As a nonprofit with a 100% volunteer board, we share trustworthy research findings to empower others with the knowledge to help lower their risk and keep their brain healthy for as long as possible—giving her diagnosis meaning. I know that she’d be proud.
As a Neuropsychologist, scientist, son, brother, father, and husband, I am acutely aware of the disease complexities, the family toll, the heartbreak, and the long goodbye.
Help me make a difference in turning the world’s dementia heartbreak into action. Follow, like, and especially repost.

Family Dementia Care: An Increasing Challenge
Nearly 4 in 10 extended families in the U.S. have an older relative with dementia. As cases rise, more families are taking on caregiving roles. The need for informed, supportive dementia care is more urgent than ever. Repost to raise awareness. 👪

💡Brain & Walk Connection🔬
Looking at how we walk could reveal clues about our brain health!🧠👣 A new study finds the way we walk (gait variability) is linked to the size of our brain's gray matter. This, in turn, affects our cognitive abilities as we age. Deeper understanding of our gait could help us support brain health in our golden years. #BrainHealth #AgingScience🔍👴👵

🚨 Urgent: Gabapentin and Dementia Risk
New research finds adults with chronic pain who received ≥6 gabapentin prescriptions had a 29% higher risk of dementia and 85% higher risk of mild cognitive impairment (MCI) over 10 years. Risk doubles among 18–64‑year‑olds and rises with more frequent use. Note that MCI is often a pre-dementia stage. Prescribing physicians need to be aware.

💉 Flu Shots & Alzheimer’s Risk: An authoritative position
Repost this important finding! ✔️
A large US study of over 2 million patients (65+) found that those who received a flu vaccine had a 40% lower risk of developing Alzheimer's over 4 years compared to the unvaccinated group.
Essentially almost 9% of unvaccinated adults over 65 yo developed Alzheimer's within 4 years. There was a "dose-response" relationship (see the graph image) showing that more flu vaccines predicted the greatest reduction in AD occurrence.
This finding is consistent with multiple studies showing that flu vaccines lower dementia risk (and also research we reviewed about 2 weeks ago [see our history] showing the flu virus triggers prions) and again strongly suggests flu vaccination will help protect brain health and reduce dementia risk in aging populations! 🧠
This is why it is extremely important to get your flu vaccines after 40 yo ( when many early signs of dementia can start).
Will flu shots always prevent Alzheimer's? No, its not 100%, but a 40% reduced risk is huge and should be taken seriously.
For brain health and more days with your loved ones, please consider getting your annual flu vaccine.
