@DurhamComplete That makes sense. I don’t bike too much downtown (mostly because of safety concerns, biking down Main with no bike lane) but often walk there & that intersection feels unsafe for pedestrians, too - in part bc it does seems to confuse people driving.
@DurhamComplete From an overall transpo safety perspective, feels like putting a roundabout here makes sense. But I’ve also seen some research that roundabouts aren’t great for cyclists. Is that something y’all have looked into? Or are they ways they can be built that are better for bikes?
@DurhamComplete @rkmazer @BikeDurham@CityofDurhamNC@movesafedurham Interestingly (& another good reason to advocate for updating/strengthening the policy!) is that no provisions are specified for cyclist/vehicle conflicts— one of the things I had specifically flagged for our intersection, Rafe, esp with all the construction & reduced visibility.
@DurhamComplete @rkmazer @BikeDurham@CityofDurhamNC@movesafedurham It’s one of the metrics for stop signs & 4-way stops (https://t.co/ATyr2zO72l) but feels emblematic of the adept’s general approach. (& @rkmazer we should compare notes on responses! I also submitted a request for additional safety measures for the Knox/Sedgefield intersection.)
@davidbradway I am also really curious what they end up announcing! I sat in on conversations for the original climate plan (https://t.co/CQeoRPgWVg) when I was a student & emissions from staff commuting/travel were a big question mark.
@scottymathess @NinthStreetWatc @DurhamComplete @hisperings @BikeDurham@davidbradway@movesafedurham@NCDOT Have also been dreaming/scheming for a while with @mattkopac, @dhcopple, & others about getting a (name TBD!) "Safe & Sustainable Communities" bond on the ballot for fall 2023 that would fund equitable green infrastructure projects across Durham.
LMK if you're interested!
@scottymathess @NinthStreetWatc @DurhamComplete @hisperings @BikeDurham@davidbradway@movesafedurham@NCDOT Dealing with this right now (trying to get more traffic calming measures across Walltown) & curious if anyone has successfully made the case with some of the "other criteria," since we are obviously never going to meet the other, ridiculous justification requirements 🙄
🌟 A star is born!
Behind the curtain of dust and gas in these “Cosmic Cliffs” are previously hidden baby stars, now uncovered by Webb. We know — this is a show-stopper. Just take a second to admire the Carina Nebula in all its glory: https://t.co/tlougFWg8B #UnfoldTheUniverse
@SamiGrover The folks @ProjectDrawdown explore a lot of these questions in their research https://t.co/0tqd09kQ0Q.
And if you haven’t read “Braiding Sweetgrass” by Robin Wall Kimmerer, you definitely should! Restoration ecology as pure poetry 💚
Some of us do electoral, some of us do issue campaigns, some of us do mutual aid, some of us organize our coworkers, and guess what? All of it is good and necessary to win. At the same time. All together.
@imanimccreary @MaryM49@Ebbdubb Yes! I’ve been thinking about this, too. I applied to be on EAB back in 2018 and got rejected… but a good reminder that it might be time to try again!
Students at #UNC-CH are protesting for climate action as part of the 2022 Global Climate Strike. They want the university to set short-term deadlines on its sustainability plan and divest from fossil fuels.
We are so thrilled Walltown was picked for the @CityofDurhamNC’s municipal compost pilot program & have LOVED being a part of it the past 6 weeks.
🤞🏼that curbside compost becomes permanent & available to all!
