The original intention was for independent, elite electors to meet locally, deliberate, and use their own wise judgment to select the best leader.
The framers did not anticipate the immediate rise of political parties. By the early 1800s, political parties began selecting loyal electors who were bound to vote for specific candidates, effectively changing the system from an independent deliberative council into a winner-take-all mathematical translation of each state's popular vote leaving a handful of swing states not because its voters are indecisive; it becomes a swing state because its history has forced it to evolve into a perfect miniature replica of the entire country. They contain just enough of the "old" America and just enough of the "new" America—socially, economically, and demographically—that they end up perfectly balanced on a political razor's edge. The rest of the nation watches them because whoever wins those specific historic battlegrounds has successfully tapped into the defining story of where the country is going next
