@Margot_B_Murphy@OxyEvo Nice! Although the March of Progress is not evolutionarily correct, it does feel like my posture and communication skills are regressing as our tools (technology) are enhancing. @OxyEvo
@MayaRicardo_@OxyEvo Keep wearing masks, get a flu vaccine, and don’t let your guard down, because the flu season typically lasts till February. Got it! @OxyEvo
@jkuo_evobio@OxyEvo Awesome website, @jkuo_evobio ! I really appreciate the section of unanswered questions within each species. Very helpful to know what is and is not known :) @OxyEvo
Sima de Los Huesos, a hominid known by its small posterior teeth, diverged from Neanderthals ~800,000 yrs ago, which researchers thought meant the LCA of Neanderthals and modern humans was before that. Turns out, Sima actually evolved separately. @OxyEvo https://t.co/aokcATuJY6
Why are Homo sapiens the last living species of the genus Homo? Could be that we’re intelligent, plan-forming, genocidal murderers who caused the extinctions of our sister species. Hmm, to be human... Lmk if you have diff. conclusions! @OxyEvo

@DelaneyRussel15@OxyEvo It was probably mentioned in class, but it was good to relearn that if a former species is labeled as a subspecies by the PSC, then the ESA cannot protect it b/c it is no longer a species - like the dusky seaside sparrow in Florida, 1973, that went extinct. @OxyEvo
@RutiagaMariah@OxyEvo Based on the article, the ESA needs to work on transparency about which animals are being protected over others that need protection, and working with/for landowners and the endangered species to best support both. I definitely see the challenges in the latter @OxyEvo
@BlondeWendesday@OxyEvo I like the references to the sympatric speciation that occurred in the Crater Lake and the Galápagos! They are great examples of how speciation does not just occur from the geographic separation of subspecies. @OxyEvo
@erin_zhang15@OxyEvo Perhaps instead of killing millions of minks to stop the spread of the mutated SARS-CoV-2 virus to humans, they could’ve just stopped production of mink coats/furs. I just feel like there was a better solution here... @OxyEvo
@BlondeWendesday@OxyEvo Very cool and clear visualization of the evolution of the complex adaptation of the human eye. I have to remind myself when I see figures like this that this isn't a "March of Progress" - it's an example of adaptations for specific species in their environments @OxyEvo
@alisaditt@OxyEvo Interesting that complex traits are derived as commonly from the efficient gene network co-option (co-opting a top regulator of an already existing gene network) as to the slow de novo one-by-one linkage of genes. Goes to show: Evolution is not necessarily efficient @OxyEvo
Due mainly to climate change, almost all coral species in the Great Barrier Reef have declined by half between 1995 and 2017. This affects the survival of baby corals via bleaching, and the survival of the organisms that call the Reef their home.
@OxyEvo
Half of the corals of the Great Barrier Reef have been lost since 1995, threatening the future of one of Earth’s most precious habitats. https://t.co/VoyRmc7xIH
@GahanLahiri@OxyEvo Very interesting article! I love the idea that massive migration due to rising sea levels & drought could increase mixed race populations - making “race” a non-viable concept!
@alisaditt@OxyEvo I wonder what is preventing the other two-thirds of the Southern killer whale population from breeding?? Perhaps there is a way conservational geneticist could help facilitate the breeding of the non-breeding whales 😄🐋
Bombus impatiens, the humble bumblebee, has had a 46% decline in North America due to its unfitness for the extremes in temp. from climate change. It’s not the bees problem, it’s ours. Is it natural selection when we’ve caused nature to change so extremely? 🤷🏽♀️🐝 @OxyEvo
The once thought “extinct” ancestors of the captive and inbred New Guinean Singing Dogs have been found in the wild & can reinvigorate their relatives’ gene pool by introducing their 28% differentiated genes! The more variation, the better 🐕 @OxyEvo
@OxyEvo Exactly! How would phylogenies look if we kept bringing back dead ancestors? The derived trait or “gene” wouldn’t be from nature, it would be from human manipulation. The study of “evolution” would have to be restructured... 😰
A wheat gene may be inserted into an otherwise dying American chestnut tree that’s been ancestrally used by the Tuscarora Nation for medicine and food, if FDA approves. Helpful in the name of conservation, or manipulating natural selection through human intervention? 🌳🤷🏽♀️
