For #ThrowbackThursday I want to give a shout-out to the game that a) got me into making games and b) did so many things rights it's still arguably the best game in its genre and one of the best over all: Diablo 2.
To not repeat what's been said over and over for the last couple of decades, I want to highlight one aspect that was especially potent to me: the environmental storytelling.
I'm not a native English speaker, so when I first played Diablo 2 I did not know a single word in English, neither from the UI nor from the story. I figured out what stats did by how much the bars changed, and when they changed, how quickly monsters died, and how that changed.
Years later after I'd learned English, I replayed Diablo 2 and to my surprise I realised I knew the whole story and most of the gameplay already. The environment itself carries the plot so, so well, from the overgrown ruins of Act 1, all the way to the contrast between Pandemonium and the rest of Act 4.
I've been trying to pick it apart and recreate it ever since, and with every step I get closer I see there are two new steps I need to take.
A masterpiece that I keep coming back to, even if the casino elements are iffy.
