OPINION: Pauline Hanson says she's "protecting Australia." From what, exactly?

Hanson went to the UK this week to “warn Australia” of not becoming like the UK. She went on Tommy Robinson's podcast and walked with him through his hometown of Luton.
What she saw, by every account she's given, was brown and Muslim faces on English streets — and she's framed that sight itself as a warning for Australia.
Let's use his real name. Stephen Yaxley-Lennon. Founder of the English Defence League. Here is his actual criminal record, in full:
2005 — Convicted of assaulting an off-duty police officer, who had intervened in a street argument. 12 months' imprisonment.
2011 — Convicted of assault for headbutting a man at an EDL rally in Blackburn.
2011 — Convicted over leading a 100-strong street brawl between football fans in Luton.
2013 — Jailed for using a false passport to try to enter the United States.
2014 — Jailed 18 months for mortgage fraud, roughly £160,000 obtained by misrepresentation.
2014 — Convicted of drug possession.
2019 — Jailed for contempt of court after livestreaming for 90 mins outside Leeds Crown Court during an active grooming-gang trial, calling on followers to find, doorstep, follow and "watch" defendants — vigilante action, in the judges' own words.
2021 — Convicted of stalking a journalist and her partner: turned up at her home at night, made false accusations, and threatened to keep returning. Given a 5-year stalking protection order.
2021 — Found liable in the High Court for libelling a Syrian refugee schoolboy, Jamal Hijazi (detailed below)
2024 — Jailed again for contempt of court, for repeatedly breaching the injunction and rebroadcasting the Hijazi libel.

Look at the pattern: assault, fraud, stalking, drugs, and — over and over — contempt of court for the same underlying conduct, using footage and livestreams to brand an entire ethnic and religious community as a coordinated criminal threat. The 2019 charge came from exactly that: casting a grooming-gang trial as proof an entire group of "brown people" were predatory gangs loose on British streets, a narrative the actual crime data doesn't support. No even close.

He incites racial hatred as a business model. One that Hanson applauds.

The Hijazi case is the clearest example. In 2018, video went viral of Hijazi — then a 15-year-old Syrian refugee — being attacked in a school playground. Robinson responded by publishing videos falsely claiming Hijazi was actually the aggressor, that he "beat a girl black and blue" and had "threatened to stab" another student. None of it was true. In 2021 the High Court ruled Robinson had libelled the boy, ordering him to pay £100,000 in damages plus roughly £500,000 in costs — and it was Robinson's refusal to stop repeating the lie afterward that sent him back to prison in 2024.

This is the man Hanson calls someone with "the best interest of his nation at heart."

So what is Hanson “protecting Australia” from?

Not from crime. Immigrants in Australia have consistently had lower imprisonment rates than the Australian-born population, documented by the Australian Institute of Criminology for decades. In the UK, once you control for age, non-citizens are underrepresented in the prison population too.

And the specific claim Hanson leans on hardest — that Sharia-practising communities drive crime — doesn't just lack support. It doesn't exist as data at all. The UK's Office for National Statistics has confirmed on the record that it does not collect crime figures broken down by religion. There is no dataset to pull that number from, because no one has ever measured it.

What the actual research does look is this — a 2021 Oxford study of nearly 10,000 UK adolescents — found Muslim teenagers engaged in the least delinquency of any group, Christian or non-religious. So the claim of a Sharia law crime wave isn't just unsupported. It's the inverse of what the evidence shows.
