A few days before Tropical Cyclone #Gezani hit eastern #Madagascar on 10 February, Tropical Cyclone Fytia struck the west, affecting 681,000 people in total.
Through the Emergency Appeal, @MadaRedCross, with volunteers, local authorities @BNGRCMada, and @IFRC support, reached over 1,900 families in the western region (with a focus on 4 communes in the districts of Ambatoboeny and Mitsinjo) with emergency kits, helping restore essential living conditions and advance early recovery efforts.
Following the destruction caused by Tropical Cyclone #Gezani in eastern #Madagascar, @MadaRedCross has supported 1,000 households in three villages of Toamasina II with dignity, kitchen, shelter and WASH kits.
Delivered alongside authorities, @BNGRCMada and @IFRC teams, this integrated support addresses communities’ essential needs, reduces health risks and accelerates recovery.

In Morombe, south-west #Madagascar, 25,000 trees were planted across 25ha of degraded forest in collaboration with @MeddMadagascar and @MadaRedCross, alongside local authorities, partners, and communities.
The campaign also supported farmers with seeds, equipment, and tools - linking ecosystem restoration with stronger livelihoods and climate resilience.
Building on the partnership agreement signed in 2025 in #Mauritius, @IFRC and @commission_coi are advancing concrete steps toward implementation.
Today’s meeting in #Madagascar focused on the Plan of Action and joint resource mobilization to strengthen cooperation and resilience across the South-West Indian Ocean region.
The engagement also highlighted the complementary roles of the #RedCross and #RedCrescent alongside @commission_coi in supporting progress toward the treaty on the protection of persons in the event of disasters.

Tropical Cyclone Fytia hit #Madagascar, making landfall in Soalala (Boeny) on 31 Jan 2026 and crossing the country before exiting the east coast on 1 Feb. As heavy rain and rising rivers overwhelmed local capacity, the Malagasy Red Cross volunteers (@MadaRedCross) supported early warnings, evacuations and site management in the hardest-hit areas.
Through an @IFRC_DREF operation, we’re supporting the Malagasy Red Cross to provide immediate relief to 1,900 households (9,500 people) in Ambato Boeny and Mitsinjo (Boeny) — including shelter, health & psychosocial support, and WASH over four months, with further assessments guiding any scale-up.

Tropical Cyclone #Gezani has caused 52 fatalities in #Madagascar, affecting more than 400,000 people. Of these, more than 16,000 are displaced.
After moving along the coast of #Mozambique, it is tracking back toward southwestern #Madagascar, expected to pass nearby on 16 February before moving away. Red alerts have been issued for Ampanihy, with yellow alerts in Beloha and Tsihombe.
