🚨 Australia’s venture capital industry has a blind spot — and it’s costing us innovation.
This week in Sydney, Equity Clear launched Australia’s first National Reporting Standard for investor pipeline diversity, bringing together 140+ leading VC firms, startup accelerators and innovation organisations to tackle a long-standing issue in our startup ecosystem.
Here’s the reality:
💰 Australian startups attracted $5.4 billion in VC investment last year
📉 Just 2% went to all-women founding teams
⏳ That number has barely changed in a decade
Why?
After consulting 160+ organisations across venture capital, government and the startup ecosystem, Equity Clear uncovered a major gap: we measure outcomes, but not the pathway.
That means we can see who gets funded — but not where diverse founders are being filtered out.
As founder Noga Edelstein says:
“We simply see the final outcome and try to work backwards.”
Equity Clear’s new reporting standard aims to change that by creating a shared framework to track how founders move through the funding pipeline — and where opportunities are lost.
This is bigger than gender.
It’s about building smarter systems, better data and stronger market intelligence so Australia funds the best ideas — wherever they come from.
Sometimes the most powerful innovation isn’t a new technology.
It’s a system that helps us see what we’ve been missing.
