I am a nanny so not that young. Like dance music, especially from the 60s and 70s. 10 pin bowling. Used to sail but a bit past it now.Enjoy good food and wine.
The English happen to be a caucasian ethnic group. They make the argument about white / non white, but it’s not accurate.
I am ethnically Irish. But im as pale as they come. If I hypothetically had a baby with an Irish woman in England, the child would be Irish, not English. “British-Irish” we could say.
You will notice on medical and census data there is no “British-Irish” option - only “white-Irish.” Presumably because Irish people are white, we don’t have to worry about them feeling excluded, as their ethnic group has no DEI protected status in society. They also wouldn’t care.
I’ve actually met English-born ethnically Irish people in Britain who describe themselves as Irish (because they are). However, they have English accents, have never lived in Ireland, and don’t plan on moving to Ireland.
They would be “culturally English” of this moment in time. But culture obviously changes - we wouldn’t have the same outlook as an Englishman from 1500, but he was still English.
But also to add, these “British-Irish” people I meet often have biases over Ireland and would support them over England in sports. I’m unsure if you can ever fully remove allegiance to your heritage nation. I would choose Britain over Ireland, as I never felt at home there, but I think I’m an exception - not the rule.
But the English will only have the England team to support, unless they have a strange self-hating preference. Can you see the imbalance here?
Many non-white ethnic groups in the west constantly exert their racial identity and talk about “their culture”…. So it seems they get the best of both worlds. They’re English but also eg Nigerian and can complain about lack of Nigerian representation, lack of celebration of Nigerian culture, and actively create initiatives which aim to privilege their own ethnic group.
The English can barely promote their history, flag, ethnic group, without being seen as hateful. Nor can they adopt a 2nd ethnic identity.
Why do we never see white people talking about their “Nigerian culture.” Because they’re not Nigerian!
@ANMalikSmith English is an ethnicity as is Caribbean or Chinese, you can be born in England and become British but if your background is Chinese then you are not English. Mixed race says what it is, you are ethnically mixed race. Its easy to work out, why all the fuss?
No 5hit, Jermany, France and Spain want Britain to rejoin the EU. Might that be to take the heat of them, financially and stop us getting a Pro-Britain government like Reform that will ignore them controlling us & allow us to perform far better than any EU member country?
@OliDugmore You didnt pay attention did you, trying to get her to say you have to be white to be English, she didnt. You have a point though as most English are actually white, funny that.
I am Egyptian, born and bred. Lived most of my life in Egypt from birth in 1990 until 2016, when I moved to the UK.
If you, as a white British man, moved to Egypt and had a child there with a white British woman, and told Egyptians your kid is just as Egyptian as they are, they'd bloody laugh at you.
Yes, ethnicity and race matter in every damn country.
Oli, please take a seat. You're an imbecile.
@deanbegley1 There was no question as far as I can see from the audience regarding what Suella identified as. That came from Fiona Bruce, so she baited Suella got an answer but turned it round to make it sound different. Blatant deliberate from the BBC.
@Collectors_Way Look at your heritage? Mine is mainly English, Scottish and Irish, if it were African and Caribbean we would look different. So you can still be British from whatever your heritage, grandparents etc came from.
@OliDugmore You were being divisive, you wanted the topic, it wasnt a question from the audience, you and Bruce wanted to bring it up. Then tried to manipulate the conversation. All you did was show yourself to be another virtue signaller.
@donmcgowan I watched it, she never said you have to be white to be English, she said she identifies as a British Asian, as she accepts her heritage. She didnt say everyone has to do that, just how she does. You are all baiting the race game.
@MatthewStadlen No the BBC embarressed itself in asking a question not asked by the audience but by the presenter, who obviously had an agenda. I call that bullying.
@LizWebsterSBF Why do you have to be" truly" English, yes English , Scottish, Welsh are types of the British Isles. Also Asian , Caribbean, African, etc can be British. Stop trying to be clever it isnt a good look.
@Joanna19997073 Ofcom or whoever should be looking into it. I agree Bruce made a statement to Suella forcing an answer that wasnt actually a question from the audience. Then that bloke prat kicked off. All orchestrated by the BBC.
@LStoerseth Excuse me, those pensioners who own a house outright have paid a mortgage for 25 years. Saved for a deposit, given up pleasures to do so. This generation wants the pleasures and a house, you cant have both.
